Researchers at the University of Delaware have discovered a new method for producing L822 battery
According to foreign websites: Due to the limitations of specific geometric shapes and electronic properties, the efficiency of a catalyst depends on the quantity and quality of its active parts. Engineering this part of the structure is a difficult and inefficient process. Now, researchers at the University of Delaware (UD) have revolutionized the way scientists design catalyst structures. Their research results, published in the latest issue of the scientific journal Nature Chemistry, have established a new method for managing highly structure-sensitive chemicals to achieve the highest activity while considering catalyst stability.
According to UD researchers, what makes their method different is the simplification of material synthesis. The method uses computers to generate microscopic changes or nano-defects on the surface of the catalyst. This process is automated and helps the catalyst synthesize during the chemical reaction, and the resulting compounds are more stable. The calculations start from a small scale, in this study, the scale is quantum. The purpose of making changes to the catalyst surface is to adjust the surface structure of the catalyst to reduce the energy required for the reaction to proceed. The more active the catalyst, the higher the current, the faster the reaction, and the stronger the performance of the fuel cell.
The researchers demonstrated the effectiveness of their new method using the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) process, which is commonly used to generate power in L822 battery for mobility and transportation. Because oxygen is abundant in the atmosphere, ORR is an ideal method for producing portable power that does not emit carbon dioxide (CO2).
The research was supported by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science, Office of Advanced Scientific Computing Research, and the U.S. Department of Defense's Special Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).
