Using Maxwell technology, Tesla may produce its own batteries: energy density is greatly improved
At the beginning of this year, energy storage product company Maxwell was acquired by Tesla for US$218 million at a 55% premium; but if we look back a few years, Tesla was not very famous in China's energy-saving and new energy vehicle industry at that time. Maxwell, on the other hand, already occupies the majority of the market share in China, no less than CATL’s market position in power batteries today. So why did Tesla buy Maxwell? On the one hand, this is because Elon Musk, the boss of Tesla, has expressed a strong interest in supercapacitors. He claims to be a big fan of supercapacitors. On the other hand, at the 2019 shareholder meeting just held, Tesla stated that its production capacity was limited by the scale of battery production and that it may enter the mining industry in the future to meet Tesla's growing expansion speed. Recently, according to foreign media reports, Tesla CEO Elon Musk hinted that Tesla is using Maxwell’s new technology for its own battery production. He further emphasized that Tesla may even mine its own raw materials to produce batteries. According to Maxwell, its dry electrode technology can increase the energy density of the battery core to more than 300Wh/kg, and may further increase to 500Wh/kg in the future. Compared with Tesla's existing battery cells, the 500Wh/kg result means that the energy density has doubled. Although Tesla claims to have the world's largest battery factory, part of its Gigafactory 1 factory in Nevada, USA, has been occupied by Panasonic. Tesla purchases batteries from Japanese suppliers for module production and produces them in the same factory. Other departments in the factory perform battery assembly work.

















Energy storage developers and the governor of Utah in the United States jointly announced the launch of a 1GW grid-scale energy storage project. According to reports, the project will become the world's largest clean energy storage project. On May 30, Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (MHPS) and Magnum Development (Magnum Development) and Utah Governor Gary Herbert jointly announced that they will launch the Advanced Clean Energy Storage Project (ACES) in central Utah. In the world’s largest project, ACES plans to develop 1GW of 100% clean energy storage as an important technical and strategic support for future decarbonization plans for the western United States power grid. In many areas of the Western United States, electricity demand may be less than the electricity produced by renewable energy sources, resulting in wasted renewable energy generation and electricity price cuts. In order to meet the electricity demand of the entire western United States and store excess electricity for future use, this will require GW-level energy storage capacity. ACES initially plans to use four clean energy storage technologies, including renewable hydrogen energy, compressed air energy storage, large-scale flow batteries, and solid oxide fuel cells, to power the grid and provide year-round power needs for 150,000 local households. Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University say carbon emissions directly affecting the U.S. power system have dropped by 30% since 2005, when a combination of natural gas and renewable energy replaced retired coal-fired power plants. Among them, Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems has played an important role in this transformation process and last year ranked first in the global market share of heavy-duty gas turbines. MHPS next plans to develop new gas turbine technology that will enable a mixture of renewable hydrogen and natural gas to generate electricity with a lower carbon footprint. The MHPS technology roadmap aims to use 100% renewable hydrogen as fuel, which will enable gas turbine power generation to achieve zero carbon emissions. The president of Mitsubishi Hitachi Americas said they are developing energy storage technology that can span from a few seconds to several seasons. Magnum has developed five salt caverns to store liquid fuels, and is developing compressed air energy storage and renewable hydrogen energy storage solutions. The company said Magnum is ideally located near the Intermountain Power Project and can leverage existing infrastructure to seamlessly connect to the Western U.S. power grid. In addition, EnelGreenPower has also joined the ACES project with its new technology. In the coming weeks and months, the project will invite more strategic and investment partners to participate in design, investment and construction in Millard Town, Utah.
