Nanotechnology could turn fabrics into lightweight batteries

Nanotechnology could turn fabrics into lightweight batteries

An engineer has discovered a way to cheaply and efficiently produce lightweight paper batteries and supercapacitors, as well as stretch and conductive textiles called e-textiles (eTexTIles) that can store energy while retaining Mechanical properties of ordinary paper or fabric,

Batteries and supercapacitors store energy through static electricity, not chemical methods.

Yi Cui, an engineer at Stanford University, developed e-textiles by soaking ordinary paper or fabric in a special nanoparticle-infused ink.

The team led by Cui even envisions numerous functional uses for their invention. Homes of the future may one day use wallpaper that stores energy. Gadget lovers can charge their portable gadget devices anytime and anywhere by attaching the gadget to their T-shirt. Energy textiles can also be used to produce mobile display clothing, high-performance sportswear with responsive functions, and wear-resistant military uniforms.

The main ingredients in developing these high-tech products are nanostructures invisible to the human eye. Nanostructures can be assembled to make them conductive. This assembled structure may provide solutions to the problems encountered by some electrical storage devices currently on the market.

The types of nanoparticles used in Cui's team's experimental setup vary depending on the product's intended function—lithium cobalt oxide is a compound commonly used in batteries, while single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are used in supercapacitors.

"Energy storage is a very old field of research, supercapacitors, batteries - these are old things. How do you really revolutionize this field? It requires quite a bit of different thinking," Cui said.
