"battery 18650 that take into account both high energy density and high safety are not only the ultimate goal of battery technology, but have also become a global trend." On March 21, Deputy General Manager of Enli Energy Technology Co., Ltd. , CTO Dr. Che Yong told the Science and Technology Daily reporter.
battery 18650 refer to energy storage devices that do not contain liquid in the battery structure and all materials exist in solid form. They are composed of "positive electrode material + negative electrode material" and solid electrolyte. Because solid-state lithium batteries have the advantages of good safety performance, high energy density and long cycle life, they are ideal power batteries for electric vehicles.
Compared with the 150-year-old lead-acid battery, lithium-ion batteries using organic electrolytes, which entered industrialization in 1991, are still the most advanced batteries on the market.
"With the rapid advancement of modern material science and manufacturing technology, the battery technology of the 'post-lead, post-lithium' era has quietly arrived." Che Yong said, "In the near future, battery 18650 will enter our society at a solid pace. Change our lives."
Che Yong explained that battery 18650 have very significant advantages. Because solid-state electrolytes replace the organic electrolytes that may explode in traditional lithium-ion batteries, this solves the dilemma of high energy density and high safety, thereby eliminating the need for electric vehicle users. "Battery life anxiety", it is even expected to achieve fast charging.
So far, through the continuous efforts of scientists, it can be said that solid-state battery technology has no insurmountable technical bottlenecks, but there are still technical problems that need to be solved. "The core technology of battery 18650 is solid-state electrolyte material technology to achieve high ionic conductivity and advanced manufacturing technology to achieve low-impedance solid-solid interface." Che Yong further explained. In terms of solid electrolyte materials, Professor Ryouji Sugano of Tokyo Institute of Technology in Japan invented a sulfide solid electrolyte in 2011 with an ionic conductivity of >10-2S/cm at room temperature (surpassing traditional organic electrolytes).
Che Yong said that this technology has become the technical foundation of Toyota Motor, the current leading company in the industrialization of battery 18650. Compared with sulfide solid electrolytes, oxide solid electrolytes have advantages in high safety and ease of production, but improving ionic conductivity at room temperature is still a century-old problem.
