Generally speaking, 50% performance of traditional lithium batteries at -20°C is considered the optimal level. However, it is reported today that Chinese scientists have successfully developed a lithium battery that can be used normally at -70°C. It has significant application potential and is even expected to be used in Polar or space.
March 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese scientists have developed a lithium battery that can be used at minus 70 degrees Celsius and is expected to be used in extremely cold areas of the Earth and even in outer space in the future.
Research published in the latest issue of the American energy academic journal "Joule" shows that the new battery developed by Xia Yongyao's team at Fudan University in China uses ethyl acetate with a low freezing point and can conduct electricity under extremely low temperature conditions as the electrolyte, and uses two Three organic compounds are used as electrodes, namely pTpAn cathode and pNTCDA anode.
The electrolyte is a chemical medium through which ions move between the two electrodes, but the electrochemical reaction at the interface between the electrolyte and the electrodes is difficult to sustain under low temperature conditions.
The researchers said that, unlike the electrodes used in traditional lithium batteries, the organic compounds used in this electrode do not rely on the "embedding process", that is, they do not need to embed lithium ions into the molecular matrix of the electrode, avoiding the slowdown of the embedding process under low temperature conditions. .
Xia Yongyao said: "Ethyl acetate electrolyte and organic polymer electrodes allow rechargeable batteries to work at extremely low temperatures of minus 70 degrees Celsius."
The performance of traditional lithium batteries is only 50% of its optimal level at minus 20 degrees Celsius, and only 12% of its optimal level at minus 40 degrees Celsius. In extremely cold areas such as Russia and Canada, the temperature is below minus 50 degrees Celsius; in space, the temperature is even as low as minus 157 degrees Celsius.
Xia Yongyao said that compared with the electrode materials of traditional lithium batteries, the materials of new batteries are abundant, cheap and environmentally friendly. He expects the price of this material to be only about one-third of the former.
However, researchers admit that the main challenge facing productization is that the energy per unit mass of this battery is not as good as that of commercialized lithium batteries, and the production process needs to be optimized. Nonetheless, Xia Yongyao believes it has significant application potential.
