Fire is the origin of human civilization, but when a battery catches fire, it's no fun at all. The previous Tesla Model S lithium battery fire incident suddenly drew people's attention to the most precious and weakest part of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles - the battery pack. Is there no way to prevent fires? Measures?
According to information from IEEESpectrum, an important automobile manufacturer is currently testing a new technology that can monitor the operating status of the battery pack, detect ignition defects in advance, and provide early warning at any time.
A report by IEEESpectrum last year titled CanSignalProcessingStopBatteryFires recorded detailed information on the early development of this technology. Now, its developers claim that the system has attracted the attention of many car companies. They have jointly developed the battery monitoring technology with an unnamed automotive industry partner and plan to launch it on the market within the next five years.

Although statistically speaking, electric vehicle fires are not as common as traditional gasoline-powered vehicle fires, once they catch fire, they can also cause great personal harm. Therefore, even if part of the cause of battery fires is due to the unstable chemical composition of the lithium battery electrolyte solution, both Fisker Karma and Tesla Model S have been troubled by the "fire scandal."

After investigating incidents involving lithium battery fires in cell phones, laptops and other consumer electronics, Lexington-based TIAX developed a set of battery monitoring technology that can run on car computers.
TIAX said that the technology can identify this rare dangerous battery that is prone to thermal runaway fires dozens of hours before it poses a threat to passengers, and such fires are usually caused by internal short circuits in the battery.
Brian Barnett, Vice President of TIAX said:
"Battery types prone to thermal runaway fires are very rare and difficult to identify, but not impossible to find. The most challenging aspect of this problem, however, is that it is almost impossible for such a faulty battery to be inspected before leaving the factory. Inspectors 'catch them out'. They are only noticeable during actual use because their internal short circuits develop slowly during daily driving.
When TIAX conducted an after-action summary of the actual safety incident, it was found that during the repeated charge and discharge cycles of the battery pack, the originally tiny metal zinc ions suddenly expanded in volume during the continuous electroplating process. These accumulated metal protrusions will adhere to the small hole in the middle of the battery separator and accumulate over time, eventually causing a short circuit between the cathode and anode of the battery.
