Scientists develop new cathode for rechargeable battery 18650 3.7v, energy storage technology with high balanced storage capacity
It is understood that scientists from the Nanobiology Laboratory of the Singapore Agency for Science, Technology and Research have developed a new method to produce lithium-sulfur cathodes, which have demonstrated stable performance and high energy storage capacity over more than 200 cycles. The research institution said this represents the hope for commercialization of lithium-sulfur batteries.
Researchers say that in theory, lithium-sulfur batteries could store 10 times more energy than current lithium-ion batteries. At the same time, lithium-sulfur devices rely on cheap, abundant sulfur, which can greatly reduce the cost of lithium-ion batteries. However, this is currently limited to theory, as the cathode structure tends to collapse during initial cycling, greatly reducing performance, and scientists have struggled to maintain the performance of such batteries over repeated cycles.
The lab team used an assembled carbon scaffold to create a three-dimensional interconnected porous nanomaterial before adding sulfur, and the scaffold prevented the cathode from collapsing. The research results show that the battery using the new electrode can reach a specific capacity of 1220 mAh per gram in 200 cycles, and the capacity fading rate is less than 0.14%. According to laboratory data, due to differences in the shape, surface area and resistance of the cathode, the specific capacity of lithium-sulfur batteries is increased by 48% and the capacity fading rate is reduced by 26%.
A professor from the research team said: The preparation technology of sulfur cathodes has a great impact on the electrochemical performance of lithium-sulfur batteries. Our method is industrially scalable and it is expected that it will have an impact on the design of future practical lithium-sulfur batteries. Tremendous influence.
Some see lithium-sulfur batteries as one of the best solutions for large-scale energy storage technology. The researchers said they will focus on improving cathode design and using nanomaterial engineering to optimize the anode, separator and electrolyte. According to the lab, their ultimate goal is to develop a complete rechargeable battery 18650 3.7v system with better energy storage capabilities than traditional lithium-ion batteries.
