  Manufacturing lithium-ion batteries with excellent performance requires solving various problems at the same time, such as maintaining the conductivity of the battery and ensuring the safety of the battery after multiple cycles. According to foreign media reports, in a new discovery, scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory used oxidative chemical vapor deposition technology to develop a new cathode coating to help solve these potential problems in lithium-ion batteries. (Source: Argonne official website) In this study, Argonne researcher Khalil Amine and colleagues extracted particles from nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) cathode material and used a sulfur-containing polymer called PEDOT to make them Wrap it up. This polymer provides a protective layer for the positive electrode from the battery's electrolyte as the battery charges and discharges. The traditional coating only protects the surface of the positive electrode particles by micron size, and the interior is prone to cracking. The PEDOT coating is different in that it can penetrate the inside of the cathode particles and add an additional shielding layer. In addition, PEDOT prevents chemical reactions between the battery and the electrolyte, but ensures the necessary transport of lithium ions and electrons required for battery operation. "This coating is beneficial to all working processes and chemical processes of the battery; at the same time, it can help prevent or inhibit all reactions that lead to battery degradation or failure," said Argonne chemist Guiliang Xu, first author of the study. ." To a large extent, the coating also prevents another reaction that would deactivate the battery's positive electrode. In this type of reaction, the cathode material transforms into another spinel structure. In addition, PEDOT materials have the ability to prevent the release of oxygen, which is the main cause of high-pressure degradation of NMC cathode materials. Amine said, "PEDOT coating can inhibit the release of oxygen during charging, making the structure more stable and improving safety." The researchers believe that by using this coating, NMC batteries can operate at higher voltages, thereby increasing energy output and improve service life. Battery scientists may expand the use of such coatings on high-nickel NMC batteries.
