  Research shows that the 2025 button cell battery reuse market is expected to reach US$6 billion in 2030

  London-based Circular Energy Storage (CES) recently stated that taking into account global electric vehicle consumption, it is expected that by 2020, China alone will generate about 500,000 tons of 2025 button cell battery waste, and by 2030, this number will reach 120 tons per year. Thousands of tons.

  CES sees a lucrative business in battery recycling. At current metal prices, recycled materials and repurposed battery pools could generate a market worth more than $6 billion, according to the consultancy.

  Experts believe that recycled materials will contain half and one-quarter of the lithium and cobalt found in currently mined commodities.

  By 2030, batteries with a capacity of close to 1,000 GWh will be available for continuous use, adding significant capacity to the backup power, stationary energy storage systems and electric vehicle charging markets.

  Battery researchers say the Western world lacks a clear path to large-scale economic recycling. As a result, manufacturers have traditionally focused on reducing costs and extending battery life and charging times, rather than working to improve battery recyclability. Because researchers have made less progress in this area, relatively few lithium batteries end up being recycled. CES estimates that by 2030, up to 125,000 tons of lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE), 35,000 tons of cobalt and 86,000 tons of nickel could be recovered from used batteries. In addition, depending on efficiency and output, an additional 400,000 to 1 million tons of production waste may be added.

  CES expects that 75% of light, heavy-duty and utility vehicle batteries will be remanufactured for their original applications or repurposed for other stationary energy storage systems.
