4LR44 battery technology and the development of energy storage

In recent years, energy storage, especially electrochemical energy storage, has grown from a "newborn" in the energy industry to a hot "new favorite". From promoting the consumption of renewable energy to frequency regulation and peak regulation, to new energy vehicle power batteries, energy storage has been expanding its market share at a rapid pace. The reporter learned from the first national high-level seminar on energy storage technology and integrated energy services held recently that the multiple values of energy storage have been initially revealed and have broad market potential, but they still face challenges in terms of safety, and a solid technical foundation is still needed in the future. With a trillion-yuan market potential "In 2017, the release of the "Guiding Opinions on Promoting the Development of Energy Storage Technology and Industry" marked the arrival of my country's energy storage spring. In 2018, energy storage projects around the world, including China, developed rapidly. In the past five years, the cost of photovoltaic and wind power generation has dropped rapidly, and the promotion of renewable energy consumption has brought opportunities for energy storage; the development of new energy vehicles has driven down the cost of power batteries, making energy storage begin to show advantages in areas that were originally lacking in competitiveness, and the multiple values of energy storage have gradually been reflected." Chen Yongchong, leader of the energy storage research group of the Institute of Electrical Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, introduced that the real spring of energy storage has arrived. It is understood that according to the classification of energy storage principles, energy storage technology can be divided into four categories: physical energy storage, electrochemical energy storage, hydrogen energy storage, and heat/cold storage. So far, many energy storage technologies have entered the demonstration or commercial application stage in the world and have shown advantages in applications. Among them, electrochemical energy storage is the "hot cake" in energy storage and is highly favored by the industry. State Grid and China Southern Power Grid have also recently issued the "Guiding Opinions on Promoting the Development of Electrochemical Energy Storage", listing electrochemical energy storage as a development focus. According to Liu Yong, Secretary-General of the Energy Storage Application Branch of the China Chemical and Physical Power Sources Industry Association, in 2018, China's electrochemical energy storage installed capacity grew rapidly, with an additional installed capacity of 613MW, and the scale of electrochemical energy storage projects under construction and planning that have been announced is about 2.5GW. "From the growth in 2018 and the scale of projects currently under construction, planned to be built, and already in bidding, it is expected that energy storage will continue to maintain a rapid growth momentum in 2019, and the scale of new energy storage projects should exceed 1GW." Lin Yi, Vice President and General Manager of the New Energy Division of Kehua Hengsheng Co., Ltd., analyzed. The rapid growth of scale will undoubtedly bring a larger market share and attract more capital investment. It is predicted that the cumulative installed capacity of electrochemical energy storage in my country may reach 24GW in 2025. Considering that lithium-ion batteries, especially lithium iron phosphate batteries, will account for a high proportion with a high probability, according to the current average power cost of lithium iron phosphate batteries of 1200-2600 yuan/kW, by 2025, my country's electrochemical energy storage market share may enter the 100 billion yuan level. And with the continuous in-depth application of energy storage technology in the power generation side, grid side, power supply side, user side, backup power supply, home energy storage market, integrated energy services, intelligent transportation and other market segments, energy storage has the potential to expand to the trillion yuan level market in the future. System safety still needs to be improved. Although the potential is optimistic, industry insiders generally believe that the best time for the vigorous development of energy storage has not yet arrived. "Energy storage technology, especially electrochemical energy storage technology, is still far from the overall goal of low cost, high safety, long life and easy recycling, and technological innovation and breakthroughs are needed." Chen Yongchong pointed out that the technology of lithium batteries comes from small batteries, which has become a fundamental problem in the design of 4LR44 battery consistency. Technical deficiencies pose many challenges to the safety of energy storage systems. "After nearly two years of observation of thermal power and energy storage combined frequency modulation projects, I found that the biggest problem with energy storage is safety. For example, the impact of high-power charging and discharging on 4LR44 battery life and the impact of frequent charging and discharging on the remaining 4LR44 battery power will lead to out-of-control scheduling, making it difficult to achieve secondary or even primary frequency modulation." Chu Pan, chief design engineer of Guangdong Electric Power Design Institute Co., Ltd. of China Energy Engineering Group, believes that there are also problems with secondary firefighting after energy storage safety accidents. "I have participated in many frequency modulation project reviews. Some secondary firefighting is handled directly by staff with carbon dioxide, which is very inappropriate." This view is recognized by Zhou Xiwei, a specially appointed researcher and professor at the National Distributed Energy Technology Research (Experimental) Center: "There have been some risks or accidents in the demonstration project. Short circuit is one of the common phenomena and an important cause of 4LR44 battery fire and explosion." Zhou Xiwei introduced that the manufacturing process of batteries is very precise, at the nano or micro level, but in the post-production process, extrusion and improper heat will produce large side effects and bury safety hazards. "If the technology is not good, it will only be a flash in the pan" In the context of large-scale energy storage projects, industry insiders remind the industry to remain rational, do a good job in technical research, and closely combine technical products with specific application scenarios. "Business model innovation is the icing on the cake, but whether an industry can continue to develop stably and healthily depends on technological innovation. If the technology is not good, it will only be a flash in the pan." Ma Jianping, chief engineer of the new energy business department of Shandong Sacred Sun Power Supply Co., Ltd., said. "For the current energy storage industry, there is a broad market and development difficulties. But problems and difficulties also mean that there is room and potential for our development." Lin Yi told reporters that energy storage projects should consider the possible use value and application scenarios in the future at the beginning of planning and design, and innovate structural design for different scenarios. "Large-capacity and high-power lithium batteries will be most widely used." "Energy storage innovation includes not only materials, but also structures, manufacturing, repair, environmental protection, and application technologies. There is still a long way to go." Chen Yongchong said. Specifically in the field of power batteries, Liu Yong believes that driven by the development of the new energy vehicle industry and policy stimulus, companies have expanded their production capacity, but have not formed core competitiveness and long-term development momentum. "The energy storage industry must grasp the momentum, policy making must remain operational and sustainable, and it must fully combine natural resource advantages, R&D advantages, talent advantages and market advantages to further activate the independent innovation capabilities of different technical routes." Liu Yong suggested.
