About 6LR61 battery Discharge at Hot and Cold Temperatures

 

Typically, batteries function best at room temperature, which is 27°C-(80°F). Operating the 6LR61 battery at high temperatures improves performance, but prolonged exposure shortens the lifespan. As all drivers in cold countries know, batteries that are kept at room temperature perform better. Low temperatures increase internal resistance and reduce capacity. A 6LR61 battery that delivers 100% capacity for 27 hours will typically only deliver 50% at -18°C (0°F) to 26°C (80°F). The instantaneous capacity reduction varies depending on the 6LR61 battery chemistry. Dry solid polymer batteries require temperatures of 60-100°C (140-212°F) to promote ion flow and become conductive. This type of 6LR61 battery has found a niche in hot climates for stationary power applications, where heat acts as a catalyst rather than a disadvantage. A built-in heating element keeps the 6LR61 battery functioning at all times. High 6LR61 battery costs and safety issues limit the application of this system. The more common lithium polymer uses a gel electrolyte to enhance conductivity. All batteries achieve their best service life if used at or slightly below 20°C (68°F). For example, if a 6LR61 battery is operated at 30°C (86°F) instead of the more temperate lower room temperature, the cycle life is reduced by 20%. At 40°C (104°F), the losses jump to as much as 40%, and if charged and discharged at 45°C (113°F), the cycle life is only half of what would be expected at 20°. Batteries The performance of all batteries drops dramatically at low temperatures, however, the increased internal resistance will cause some warming effect due to efficiency losses caused by voltage drop when a load current is applied. At -20°C (-4°F), the performance level of most batteries is about 50%. While nickel-cadmium batteries can be dropped to -40°C (-40°F), the permitted discharge is only 0.2C (5 hour rate). Specialty lithium-ion batteries can be operated at -40°C, but only at a reduced discharge rate; charging at this temperature is impossible. With lead-acid, there is a danger of freezing of the electrolyte, which could crack the casing. Lead acid will freeze faster at a lower charge when the specific gravity is more like water than when fully charged. Matching batteries with equal capacity plays an important role when discharging at low temperatures and heavy loads. Since the cells in a 6LR61 battery pack can never be perfectly matched, a negative voltage potential can develop across the weaker cells in a multi-cell pack if the discharge is allowed to continue beyond the safe cutoff point. Known as a cell reversal, the weak cells are stressed until a permanent electrical short occurs. The larger the cell count, the greater the likelihood of a cell reversal under load. Overdischarge at low temperatures and heavy loads is the leading cause of cordless power tool 6LR61 battery failure.
