  According to foreign media reports, Daimler, ThyssenKrupp System Engineering, German IAV and Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technology and Systems (Fraunhofer IKTS) are collaborating on a project called EMBATT -goes-FAB's project aims to develop bipolar lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles based on lithium-ion technology, which can allow electric vehicles to have a maximum cruising range of 1,000 kilometers. The ultimate aim of the EMBATT-goes-FAB project is to advance the industrialization of bipolar batteries upon successful completion of the first phase of the project.

  Lithium-ion battery manufacturers

  Bipolar batteries are similar to fuel cells and consist of stacked electrodes connected in series. Only lithium-ion batteries have bipolar electrodes, that is, the active materials of the cathode and anode of the battery are applied to a common electrode carrier.

  In addition, the packaging of such cells is also different, the individual cells are not packed side by side, but are stacked on top of each other in a large area. Only the stacked electrodes have fixed housings. This type of packaging allows the elimination of housing parts and connecting elements, saving cost and space in electric vehicles. Most importantly, space can be made for more active materials, allowing batteries to store more energy and enable electric vehicles to achieve longer ranges.
