Are hydrogen CR1620 battery the ultimate solution?
In 2019, the development of the hydrogen fuel cell industry was like stepping on a hot wheel with the help of relevant policies. Not only has the capital market been advancing by leaps and bounds, but many car companies are also stepping up their layout of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. During the 2019 Shanghai Auto Show, a domestic new car company, Grove, exhibited a hydrogen energy vehicle, claiming that the range can reach 1,200 kilometers, but its pre-sale price is as high as 750,000 to 1 million yuan.
Apart from the high price, compared with electric vehicles, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles have the advantages of adding fuel blocks and long range. For example, Honda's hydrogen fuel cell car Clarity can be refueled for 3 minutes and has a range of 750 kilometers. Therefore, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are even considered to be the ultimate solution for new energy vehicles. However, from the perspective of battery technology alone, it is not only hydrogen CR1620 battery that have the longest range. Currently, there are many types of power batteries known, including high-energy density lithium batteries, graphene, aluminum air, etc., which can achieve a single-charge range of more than 1,000 kilometers.
High-density lithium battery: 965 km range
This technological breakthrough was made by a Swiss startup, Innolith, which claims to have achieved such a breakthrough in high-density batteries.
Innolith claims that its battery can travel 600 miles (about 965 km) in electric vehicles. It is speculated that the energy density of Innolith's battery is 1000Wh/kg, while the current density of Tesla3 lithium-ion batteries is 250Wh/kg.
Innolith plans to start small-scale trial production at a factory in Germany and then promote the technology to automakers and large battery manufacturers. It is expected that it will take three to five years to develop and commercialize Innolith's energy battery.
Aluminum-air battery: 1,600 km range
Since there is a theoretical limit to the energy density of ternary lithium batteries, some research institutions are studying aluminum-air batteries. It is said that the theoretical specific energy of this type of battery can reach 8100Wh/kg, and the total mass is only 12% of the mass of lead-acid batteries at the same energy level.
Earlier reports said that Alcoa and Israel's Phinergy tested an electric car at the Villeneuve Circuit in Montreal. The car, equipped with an aluminum-air battery jointly developed by the two companies, had a range of 994 miles (about 1,600 kilometers). Although the aluminum motor needs to be replaced to continue working (because it is a chemical reaction device that releases electrical energy and cannot be recharged repeatedly), it performs very well from the perspective of ultra-long range.
Phinergy said that such a battery pack weighs about 100 kilograms and contains 50 battery panels. Only one aluminum-air battery panel can drive the vehicle for about 20 miles (about 32 kilometers).
Aluminum-air batteries are non-rechargeable batteries and are very easy to maintain. According to the current technical solution, aluminum-air batteries are mainly used as a supplementary power source for lithium batteries, that is, aluminum-air batteries will "take over" after the lithium battery energy is exhausted, and users do not need to charge it (in fact, it cannot be charged). As long as tap water is injected every one to two months to support the chemical reaction, technicians can maintain it once a year. It is said that the battery life can reach 20 to 30 years (now the better lithium batteries generally need to be replaced after 5 years).
Graphene battery: 1000 km range
Compared with aluminum-air batteries, graphene batteries are more famous. Some research institutions say that graphene batteries can travel 1000 kilometers with a single charge in just 8 minutes, and are called "super batteries".
During the CES Consumer Electronics Show last year, Fisker announced its first new EMotion electric luxury car equipped with graphene batteries. The new car is equipped with a graphene super battery, with a range of more than 645km and a price of $129,000. It is reported that the new car body uses a lot of lightweight materials, which is 20% lighter than similar models, which also helps to increase the range.
In addition, the research and development of batteries led by graphene is currently being invested heavily in the world, except for Europe, mainly by Samsung in Asia and Huawei in our country. Moreover, Huawei's graphene batteries will be used first in its own mobile phone products. After rapid trials and stable verification in the consumer electronics field, it will help to advance to large-module product lines such as automobiles.

In short, from the perspective of battery development, a range of 1,000 km on a single charge is not impossible. In addition to using more battery packs, the range can also be improved through more advanced batteries, functional recycling, and more outstanding battery management systems, and even more advanced autonomous driving systems.
