A new CR2032 batterytechnology developed abroad can release almost all stored energy
According to a recent report on the British "Science News" website, Canadian scientists wrote an article in the recently published "Science" magazine stating that they have redesigned the lithium-oxygen CR2032 batteryand obtained a new CR2032 batterythat can release almost all the stored energy and recharge it. With a discharge count of up to 150 times, it is expected to provide more reliable and energy-intensive power supplies for electric vehicles and special applications in the future.
Compared with typical lithium-ion batteries, lithium-oxygen batteries have greater energy density and are made from more sustainable materials, but the main reason why they have not yet "flighted into ordinary people's homes" is that they do not have a long life.
The researchers explained that typical lithium-oxygen batteries form lithium peroxide and produce unwanted chemical by-products, which wastes energy. Therefore, a lithium-oxygen CR2032 batterycan only deliver about 80% of its stored energy to the device it powers. Larry Curtis, a materials chemist at Argonne National Laboratory in the United States, pointed out that these chemicals can also damage the electrolyte and cathode of the battery, causing it to "die" after being charged dozens of times.
To create a better lithium-oxygen battery, chemist Linda Nazar of the University of Waterloo and colleagues replaced the commonly used organic electrolyte with an inorganic molten salt and the standard carbon-based cathode with a metal base. In the resulting new battery, oxygen and lithium form lithium oxide, which can store 50% more energy than lithium peroxide. What's more, lithium oxide produces no chemical byproducts, allowing the new lithium-oxygen CR2032 batteryto release nearly all of its stored energy to other devices and be recharged more often than other lithium-oxygen batteries.
Curtis said the new batteries could be used to power electric vehicles in the future, but there is still a long way to go before practical applications, "because new batteries must be heated to at least 150°C to work."
Yang Shaoen (transliteration), an energy and materials researcher at MIT, commented that changing the substances in the electrolyte may reduce the operating temperature of the battery. The new lithium-oxygen CR2032 batterycan also be used as a compact power source for aircraft, spacecraft and special applications.
