The US has developed a magnesium CR2032 button cell with better energy density and material cost than lithium batteries

 

Although lithium-ion batteries are the main energy storage technology today, there are still many research groups and manufacturers trying to find a more stable and effective energy storage technology than lithium-ion batteries. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) of the US Department of Energy has recently successfully developed a magnesium CR2032 button cell, and the energy density and material cost of the battery prototype are better than lithium-ion batteries.

 

In theory, battery ions can flow between the positive and negative electrodes through electrolytes, and the battery is powered by electrochemical reactions. The reaction must be reversible, otherwise the battery cannot be charged. However, the carbonate electrolyte in the magnesium battery is easy to form a barrier layer on the magnesium surface during the charge and discharge cycle, which hinders the battery from charging. Although magnesium can also be charged and discharged through highly corrosive liquid electrolytes, if corrosive electrolytes are used, magnesium batteries will not be able to operate at high voltages, and there are also safety concerns.

 

At present, researchers have successfully built a prototype of a magnesium CR2032 button cell. The study also pointed out that the protected magnesium anode can also be charged in a carbonate electrolyte and can supply more energy. In addition to successfully developing a rechargeable magnesium battery, the research team also provided a solution to the incompatibility between the anode and electrolyte and to overcome the ion limitations of the cathode.
