Spain develops L822 battery to replace lithium battery

 

Reference News Network reported on February 22 that Spanish newspaper El País reported on February 15 that Spanish researchers are developing a prototype battery that uses calcium instead of lithium.

 

Since the discovery of electricity, inventors have been working on finding ways to store electrical energy. It didn't take long for batteries to become the most common chemical energy storage method, but in order to make batteries portable and rechargeable, they spent centuries adjusting the combination of battery elements, eventually forming the battery devices that humans rely on for life and production today.

 

As the real protagonist of the era of portable electronic devices, lithium batteries seem destined to achieve unprecedented success. Lithium is expensive to extract and dangerous to handle, making it difficult to process and recycle. The demand for lithium exceeds the available resources. Lithium resources are characterized by geographical isolation (found in places such as the Australian wilderness), which increases the complexity of the lithium supply chain.

 

According to EU data, by 2050, the EU will need 60 times the current supply of lithium to meet the battery needs of electric vehicles and store the renewable energy needed to meet the carbon emission targets set by the EU Green Agreement.

 

Based on this premise, researchers such as Rosa Palacín at the Barcelona Institute of Materials Science are trying to use elements that are more abundant in Europe to create batteries with similar performance. She and her team (members from several EU countries) have begun to develop prototype batteries based on calcium. Calcium is close to lithium in the periodic table. The program is funded by a fund affiliated with the European Innovation Council and is named the CARBAT project.

However, the process of selecting other components required to build a prototype battery (such as the electrolyte through which ions flow) is complicated. "A lot of interactions between calcium ions and solvent molecules occur in the electrolyte, which reduces the mobility of calcium," Paracin said. The electrolyte's excellent conductivity will help the ions move faster, thereby increasing the power of the battery.

 

To overcome this obstacle, the researchers developed a variety of salt and solvent models in order to find an electrolyte that can form a passivation layer on the calcium electrode to facilitate ion movement. "It seems that all electrolytes that work contain boron," Paracin said.
