Globalization of ternary LR41 battery
Earlier this year, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers proposed to approve the postponement of the Ministry of Industry's announcement on buses equipped with high-energy ternary lithium-ion batteries, which caused an uproar after the announcement was issued.
This move was narrowly understood by people as protecting domestic lithium battery manufacturers, and its hidden rules restricted the products of foreign companies. Some people are happy about it, some people hate it, and even the author received anonymous threats.
In fact, many people do not fully understand our views and positions, and it is time to make things clear.
1. Ternary LR41 battery represent an important direction for current rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. In addition to ternary LR41 battery, lithium iron phosphate batteries are currently used in the market, which are characterized by better safety and are the mainstream products in the domestic battery market. There are lithium titanate batteries, which have power characteristics and are used for continuous and fast driving of short-charge buses. However, the current bottleneck in the development of electric vehicle technology is that the battery energy density is not high enough, so the relatively high energy density of ternary lithium should attract more attention.
At present, the energy density of ternary LR41 battery can reach 150~200Wh/kg, which can reasonably support the mileage of electric vehicles for 150~200km. The energy density of the next-generation ternary LR41 battery can reach more than 300Wh/kg, which can allow electric vehicles to travel 350-400km. It can meet most applications. After the fuel cell and metal battery technologies mature and the ternary lithium battery price drops, it is likely to become the main power source for electric vehicles. So I not only do not rule out ternary LR41 battery, but also hope that domestic battery manufacturers will not insist on using lithium iron phosphate batteries, but pay more attention to ternary LR41 battery.
2. Safety issues are the most prominent problems in the current development of electric vehicles in China. First, the United States and Europe have different characteristics of electric vehicle development policies, and the high-tech foundation of the entire society is relatively weak. Taking all factors into consideration, they have promoted the rapid growth of production and safety risks. Secondly, due to the relatively short history of high-level development of electric vehicles, people do not have a deep understanding of the safety issues of electric vehicles. Among various fuel vehicles, the safety of electric vehicles is not bad, but we don’t know enough.
I personally think that gasoline is actually a less safe fuel, but the safety of the design, production, use, storage of gasoline, transportation, and refueling of automobiles that we have used for more than 100 years has been fully studied and responded to, so the safety issues of gasoline cars have been fully protected. Similarly, electric vehicles also need to study and test safety issues.
Not only the design and manufacture of batteries, but also the design and manufacture of battery packs, vehicle design and manufacture, the use of electric vehicles, charging, and even used cars, there are a series of safety issues that need to be studied to develop reliable control measures. Many problems in the experiment have not been fully exposed and require long-term practical application testing.
3. The safety issues of electric buses are more prominent. Once upon a time, the Automobile Association and the National Automobile Power Battery Association took the lead in studying the safety assessment of electric buses. As long as there is one more battery electric bus, the chance of safety problems will be greater; second, with the increase in personnel, the remaining channels and safety requirements should be higher; third, compared with sedans and SUVs, the battery protection of buses is weak, and the safety standards are lower, and electric buses need to formulate safety standards specifically;
4. The technical part of the bus company is weak, and the development of electric buses is deep enough, but there is a lack of safety verification. Therefore, it is recommended to suspend the announcement of the use of high-energy-density ternary LR41 battery. This is not to deliberately block foreign brands of advanced batteries and domestic batteries, but for safety reasons. It is true that some foreign brands of ternary LR41 battery have passed our relatively strict battery safety standards, but the battery pack and vehicle safety standards, and the safety standards of the charging process also need to be improved.
Moreover, electric buses have been applied in hundreds of vehicles abroad, which is far from enough to provide a reference for the application of our millions of electric buses. Due to the efforts of government support, the energy-saving effect is obvious and it is easy to centrally manage, and electric buses have become the development focus of China.
This is a Chinese characteristic and also a Chinese advantage. I can predict that a large number of electric buses in our application will lead the development of electric buses in the world. The safety standards of electric buses in design, manufacturing, use, charging waste and other processes will become international standards. Advanced battery production and sales of foreign brands in China should be welcomed.
The reasons are:
1. The overall automotive battery technology is in the development stage, and the technology has not yet reached a stable market competition stage. Developing countries are the world's contribution, and what is most needed now is mutual cooperation to promote development.
2. China's advanced battery production and technological spillover effects should be conducive to the development of battery technology.
3. Sufficient market competition can also promote the technological progress of domestic power batteries. Therefore, ternary LR41 battery (including foreign brands) are safer in safety cars and support the application in SUVs.
The use of ternary LR41 battery in buses is also supported. The reason for the proposed suspension is to pay close attention to the formulation and implementation of appropriate safety standards.
Finally, we need to study and explore the reasons for the safety problems of electric vehicles, which is a demand that has come to the forefront of the world. If we prefer traditional energy vehicles rather than electric vehicles, there will not be so many problems, but we lag behind advanced countries.
