Research and development of new magnesium-ion Nickel Hydride No. 5 battery components

 

The Korean Research Foundation announced that Chungnam National University in South Korea has successfully developed a new magnesium-tin (Mg2Sn) alloy cathode component with high-capacity charge and discharge performance, which is expected to be widely used in the field of next-generation lithium-free secondary batteries. The research results were published in the international academic journal Journal of Power Sources. The lithium-ion batteries currently used are expensive, have a short service life and are dangerous to explode. Magnesium-ion batteries are relatively safer, more environmentally friendly and have a higher energy density than lithium-ion batteries, and will be widely used in next-generation energy storage devices. However, when used as cathodes, magnesium metal batteries, like lithium secondary batteries, cannot work at room temperature and can only be used at high temperatures of 60-100 degrees. The research team said that magnesium-tin alloy is a new cathode component. Unlike magnesium metal cathodes that are electrochemically oxidized, it ensures stability between electrolytes during charge and discharge. Mg2Sn cathode materials can be combined with various anode materials to produce a variety of magnesium-ion batteries. When making cathodes, the conductivity, capacity and power can be adjusted to improve Nickel Hydride No. 5 battery performance.
