The introduction of maintenance-free batteries has a great impact on the SLI battery market. "Maintenance-free" means that no water needs to be added to the electrolyte during the 2-5 years of battery life.

Standard button battery cr2032 evaporate very little water, and most of the water consumed is due to electrolysis to generate hydrogen and oxygen. MF batteries often use substances such as silicon and calcium sulfate to form gels or use porous glass separators to restrict the flow of electrolytes. The battery design has a leak-proof casing with a valve to release excessive gas pressure, so it is sometimes called a "semi-sealed" system.

Compared with many conventional batteries, this battery has a very high charge retention ability and can still maintain 30% of its capacity after one year. Another advantage is that there is no escape of acid mist and no corrosion of metal components near the battery.
