The United States plans to invest $15 million to study 14500 battery recycling technology
In view of the rising global demand for lithium 14500 battery raw materials, in order to cope with the risk of potential supply shortages, the US government has begun to develop 14500 battery recycling technology, hoping to obtain a more stable and reliable source of raw materials by recycling lithium batteries from electric vehicles, mobile phones and other devices.
The US Department of Energy announced that it will spend $15 million to launch a three-year research and development plan at Argonne National Laboratory near Chicago under national security considerations. This research project will combine the strengths of Argonne, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, National Renewable Energy Laboratory and several universities to jointly develop the latest technology, hoping to catch up with China's strength in manufacturing and recycling lithium batteries.
Simmons, an official of the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy under the US Department of Energy, said that the United States relies on other countries to supply metals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, graphite and finished batteries, which is not conducive to national security, because some of these source countries are not close allies.
Experts pointed out that lithium salts are mainly produced in a few South American, African countries and Australia, while cobalt mines mostly come from Congo. China, which has recently had a tense trade relationship with the United States, is a major producer of lithium batteries. China has actively recycled batteries to obtain lithium raw materials and reduce its dependence on imported lithium raw materials.
The continued increase in demand for lithium batteries is also the reason why the US government has invested in the research and development of recycling technology. Jeff Spangenberg, director of the ReCell Center, the latest recycling center established by the Department of Energy, said that US car manufacturers will invest heavily in building electric vehicles in the next decade, and the current electric vehicle batteries are also approaching the end of their service life, so now is the time to start 14500 battery recycling.
