  At the recently held China Electric Vehicles 100 Forum (2019), Tianji Automobile displayed solid-state battery and fuel cell exhibition vehicles, saying that the Tianji ME7 solid-state battery exhibition vehicle is the first publicly displayed solid-state battery prototype vehicle in China, and its fuel cell Battery vehicles will serve as mobile charging vehicles and become the core of China's first fuel cell commercialization plan.

  No coincidence. At last year's Guangzhou Auto Show, RG Nathalie, a subsidiary of AIWAYS, debuted on stage. The power system it uses is also a methanol reforming hydrogen fuel cell. Data shows that it can accelerate from 100 kilometers to 100 kilometers in 2.5 seconds, with a top speed of 300 kilometers per hour, and a maximum driving range of Reached 1200 kilometers.

  At the 3rd International Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Vehicle Conference (FCVC 2018) held in October last year, as the only new car-making force participating in the exhibition, WM Motor demonstrated a car powered by a methanol fuel cell system. Passenger cars work on a similar principle to hydrogen fuel cell cars, except that hydrogen is replaced by methanol.

  So many cases seem to indicate a reality, and new car-making forces "favor" new technologies in the automotive industry. What’s even more interesting is that the new forces seem to “favor” cutting-edge technologies that have not yet been mass-produced, or even have not yet entered the industrialization stage of development.

  The solid-state battery deployed by Tianji Automobile has become a hot spot in global battery technology. In response to the rise of the battery industry in China and South Korea, Japan has mobilized nationwide efforts to develop next-generation solid-state batteries, with annual government expenditures reaching 5 billion to 10 billion yen. The originally relatively weak battery industries in the United States and Europe are also making every effort to develop a new generation of solid-state batteries, but they are currently in the research and development stage. Ouyang Minggao, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and executive vice chairman of the China Electric Vehicles Association of 100, predicts that large-scale commercialization of all-solid-state batteries will only be realized after 2025 to 2030.

  The fuel cell vehicle technology solution adopted by Tianji Automobile is the same as that of AIWAYS. It is a methanol reforming hydrogen production solution. This is not the current "mainstream" technical route for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. The difference is that a methanol reformer is used to replace the hydrogen storage tank. . In the reformer, the mixture of methanol and water is converted into hydrogen-rich reformed gas. The reformed gas enters the high-temperature proton membrane stack to generate electricity and supply electricity to the outside (i.e., automobiles). A technician who has been engaged in the development of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles for a long time told reporters that in the industrial field, the technology of hydrogen production by methanol reforming is relatively mature and widely used. However, in the field of transportation, vehicle-mounted methanol reforming hydrogen production technology is still in the research stage. There are still problems such as complex systems, long start-up time, low system power, low product maturity, and carbon emissions that need to be overcome.

  As for the methanol fuel cell system displayed by WM Motor, it is even more "rare". The Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (DMFC) used has the characteristics of low-temperature quick start, clean and environmentally friendly fuel, and simple battery structure, but it is smaller than conventional ones. Proton exchange membrane fuel cells require more platinum catalysts and are currently in the research stage.

  As Fu Yuwu, honorary chairman of the Society of Automotive Engineers of China, said, the "amazing" performance of the new car-making forces in 2018 was not only reflected in the realization of mass production, but also in the new concepts, new ideas and new practices of the new car-making forces. It has had a big impact on the entire automobile industry. Currently, the global automobile industry is ushering in a new round of technological revolution, with many new technology routes springing up like mushrooms after a rain. Compared with the more "conservative" traditional automobile companies, new car-making forces are expected to help more cutting-edge technologies from research and development to production.
