"2018 is the first year of energy storage. The energy storage industry has
experienced explosive growth since last year. We predict that the rapid growth
of the energy storage market will continue for 3 to 5 years. The spring of
energy storage has arrived. For participants in this industry There will be
broad development opportunities." At the Energy Storage International Summit
2019, Wang Wei, director of energy storage business of CATL New Energy
Technology Co., Ltd. ("CATL"), said in an interview with a reporter from China
Electric Power News, riding on Taking advantage of the development of the energy
storage industry, CATL will successively launch long-life and safer energy
storage products, increase promotion and application in the energy storage
market, and deepen the energy storage market through global projects.
China Electric Power News: Since 2018, the grid-side energy storage market
has grown rapidly. How does CATL plan its layout in the grid-side and power
generation-side energy storage fields? More and more companies are investing in
overseas energy storage markets. What do you think of the development of
overseas energy storage markets?
Wang Wei: Grid-side energy storage has become the mainstream application
market for energy storage. The advancement of the national power system reform
has gradually emerged as a driving force for the application of grid-side energy
storage. Starting from the energy storage project in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu Province
in 2018, the application of grid-side energy storage has increased and is in a
stage of rapid development. China is already at the forefront of the world in
grid-side energy storage applications. CATL is optimistic about the market
prospects of energy storage on the grid side and power generation side. In terms
of user-side energy storage, the technical routes are more diverse and the scale
is relatively insufficient. For the global market, the development situation of
each region is different, so the energy storage market needs to be laid out
according to local conditions.
In the overseas energy storage market, due to the relative weakness of
foreign power grids and the rapid development of overseas new energy sources,
the demand for energy storage is more urgent. The overseas energy storage market
is equally important to CATL, which will deploy energy storage in the global
market.
China Electric Power News: In recent years, the number of companies
entering the energy storage industry has increased. What advantages does CATL
have, starting from power batteries and extending to the energy storage field?
At present, energy storage technology is booming. What do you think of the
development of lithium battery energy storage technology?
Wang Wei: Power batteries and energy storage are the two core businesses of
CATL. Energy storage occupies an irreplaceable position in CATL’s corporate
strategy.
Looking at the global energy storage field, CATL uses lithium iron
phosphate batteries as its main technical route. Compared with Japanese and
Korean ternary lithium batteries, it has more advantages in battery safety and
stability. In 2011, CATL began to participate in the State Grid Corporation of
China's Zhangbei wind and solar storage demonstration project. Currently, CATL
is involved in multiple energy storage projects and has accumulated rich
experience in energy storage battery applications.
From a domestic perspective, CATL will launch lithium batteries dedicated
to energy storage in the next step, separating the technical routes of energy
storage lithium batteries from automotive power lithium batteries, and striving
to make energy storage batteries longer-lived, safer, and more professional.
At a time when energy storage technology routes are flourishing, companies
in the industry will face energy storage cost issues. Lithium battery energy
storage relies on power batteries. Driven by the development of new energy
vehicles, the industrial development of power batteries will also drive up the
cost of lithium battery energy storage. Compared with other energy storage
technology routes, the cost of lithium battery energy storage still has room for
decline, and lithium battery energy storage will also flourish.
China Electric Power News: What problems still exist in the development of
the energy storage market? What suggestions do you have for these issues?
Wang Wei: CATL has entered the energy storage field since 2011, and energy
storage products have gone through several iterations during this period. Since
energy storage has experienced explosive growth in 2018, more and more
participants have entered the industry. Currently, from a global perspective,
some energy storage products are not yet mature. In addition, energy storage
also requires the improvement and standardization of some relevant laws and
regulations, such as fire access standards and acceptance specifications, and
the connection with the original national standards and policies.
