18650 battery bulk. Can pumped hydro technology solve Britain's nuclear problem?

release time:2024-01-05 Hits:     Popular:AG11 battery

Hitachi, the parent company of Horizon Nuclear Power, has announced the cancellation of development of the Wylfa Newydd power station in Anglesey, North Wales, UK - the second nuclear power project to be canceled in recent months, according to Intelligent Land Investments (ILI) Group According to the report, pumped hydro projects can help. The cancellation of Wylfa Newydd power station could mark the end of Britain's nuclear ambitions, putting energy security and thousands of jobs at risk. We need an alternative energy strategy that invests in more renewable energy, including pumped hydro.

Currently, there are 8 special projects generating electricity in the UK. However, only one new-build special program is scheduled to be commissioned in 2030. The cancellation of Wylfa Newydd means that five of the six planned new buildings are unlikely to be built. The six planned buildings are designed to meet 15% of the UK's electricity needs, but if new energy solutions are not adopted, the UK may face large-scale power outages and higher energy bills. In addition, these planned specialties are designed to meet the majority of the carbon emission reductions needed in the UK as it phases out coal-fired power stations. Justin Bowden, secretary for energy at the GMB Alliance, said the decision led to "the very real possibility of an energy crisis in the UK".

This presents a great opportunity for the country to invest in large-scale renewable energy, as US Commerce Secretary Greg Clark recently said: “Renewable energy has become increasingly affordable over the past five years. Nuclear energy has become more expensive because of safety measures. In addition, renewable energy sources are more competitive than nuclear energy because they can be built faster and cheaper and are increasingly independent of subsidies."

UK development projects currently include 4.1GW of pumped hydro generation capacity. This will go a long way toward filling the gaps caused by the lack of new specialties, while also helping to resolve intermittency issues. Unlike nuclear power, pumped storage hydro (PSH) does not require government subsidies, but funding new PSH developments could be problematic given that it is not currently included in the UK capacity market. This could be addressed by changing current government policies to place PSH on a level playing field with other technologies.

There are seven potential PSH sites which, during construction, will provide thousands of jobs in various regions and could generate electricity equivalent to two special buildings. In addition, PSH plants can harness excess renewable energy generated during low demand periods and feed large amounts of power back into the grid during peak demand periods.

“The UK is at a critical juncture to become a world leader in renewable energy generation and drive our progress towards meeting all CO2 targets,” said Mark Wilson, CEO of ILI Group, which has three pumped storage hydro (PSH) projects in the planning stages. Representing more than 1.5GW of capacity, its main aim is to bring 1.5GW of energy storage to the UK electricity market via three new pumped hydro facilities in Scotland. With the development of all renewable energy sources, especially offshore wind, pumped hydro plants are a key component in ensuring that all these technologies play a role in the future energy mix. "

According to a report from the Carbon Trust, 6GW of energy storage could save £2.4 billion per year in the UK or the equivalent of £50-150 per household. Now with mature technology, this is possible.
