The difference between polymer lithium-ion batteries and ordinary batteries is in the electrolyte. In the original design in the 1970s, a solid polymer electrolyte was used. As a compromise, some gel electrolytes were introduced. Most of the polymer lithium-ion cell phone batteries currently on the market are blended batteries that contain gel electrolytes. The system was modified with a lithium-ion polymer, making it the only polymer power source currently available for portable devices.
