Comparison of polymer batteries and liquid lithium batteries
Liquid lithium battery
Due to the different production processes of various manufacturers, the polymer lithium battery on the market is currently divided into two different structures: winding type and laminated type (TCL and ATL are represented), but the specifications adapted to the needs of mobile phones are mostly below 4mm thickness. Compared with the liquid, because the polymer packaging uses a thinner aluminum film, which is thinner than the steel shell and the aluminum shell, and the production method is different from the liquid lithium battery, the thinner the polymer, the better the production, in theory, the battery can be produced below 0.5mm thickness.
Liquid lithium is on the contrary, the thicker the better production, less than 4mm thickness of the battery is difficult to produce, even if produced, the capacity is obviously not as good as polymer lithium, the cost has no advantage. Therefore, the thinner the battery, the lower the polymer production cost and the higher the liquid production cost.
However, on the thicker specifications, the liquid lithium supply chain is mature, the process is mature, the production efficiency is high, the yield is high, and the manufacturing cost advantage is strong. From the current market point of view, 5mm, 6mm thickness series of liquid lithium batteries, although the capacity is much higher than 3mm, 4mm thickness series batteries, but the price is much lower. Theoretically speaking, the material cost of the polymer in the 5mm and 6mm thickness specifications is close to the liquid, but the current process cost of the 5mm and 6mm series batteries is much higher than the liquid, so there is still a lot of distance to truly compete with the liquid on this specification.
The main structure of the general battery includes three elements: positive electrode, negative electrode and electrolyte. The so-called polymer lithium-ion battery means that at least one or more of these three main structures use polymer materials as the main battery system. In the currently developed polymer lithium-ion battery system, polymer materials are mainly applied to the positive electrode and electrolyte. The positive electrode materials include conductive polymer or inorganic compounds commonly used in lithium-ion batteries, the electrolyte can use a solid or colloidal polymer electrolyte, or an organic electrolyte, and the negative electrode usually uses lithium metal or lithium carbon interlayer compounds. General lithium-ion technology uses liquid or colloidal electrolytes, so strong secondary packaging is required to accommodate combustible active ingredients, which increases weight and cost, and also limits size flexibility. There is no excess electrolyte in the polymer lithium-ion process, so it is more stable and less prone to dangerous situations caused by overcharging, needling, collision or other damage to the battery, and excessive use.
