Why can't 18650 lithium rechargeable battery be transported by air?
Lithium-based metal materials are especially prone to chemical reactions, and are easy to stretch and ignite. If lithium batteries are packaged and transported incorrectly, they are easy to ignite and explode, and safety accidents often occur. Lithium is a reactive metallic material that releases hydrogen gas and heat, which can cause ignition. During air transportation, due to internal and external short circuits, lithium batteries may cause the battery system to overheat, causing the battery to catch fire or explode. The molten lithium caused by the ignition may penetrate into the cabin or cause sufficient pressure to break. The cabin wall panels allowed the fire to spread to other parts of the aircraft.
Once the lithium battery ignites, it can only be extinguished after it is consumed. However, the foam fire extinguishing agent provided on board the aircraft has no effect at all on extinguishing the ignition of the UPS lithium battery. This shows that lithium-ion aviation Safety risks during transportation are particularly prominent.
Basic regulations for air transportation of lithium batteries:
1. Lithium batteries must comply with the testing requirements of UN38.3 and the rice drop packaging test;
2. The shipper shall present a risk declaration document identifying the UN number;
3. The outer packaging boxes must be labeled with 9 categories of dangerous goods and have a "safe delivery" work label;
4. Its design should ensure that it will not crack under normal transportation conditions, and should be equipped with reasonable measures to avoid external short-circuit faults;
5. The lithium battery UPS should be protected by strong external packaging to avoid short-circuit faults. In addition, contact with conductive materials that can cause short-circuit faults in the same package should be avoided;
6. Additional requirements for transporting 18650 lithium rechargeable battery in equipment: The equipment should be fixed to prevent the rechargeable battery from moving within the package, and the packaging method should prevent the rechargeable battery from accidentally starting during transportation;
7. Individually packaged lithium batteries with a net weight not exceeding 35kgs should be loaded on a trailer to avoid significant vibration during transportation.
