By optimizing the materials and design specifications of bipolar plates and thin-film motor components, Horizon's Dianhuan R&D center successfully achieved continuous energy density: under a full-size short stack, when the voltage is 0.6V, the energy density of each cell is 1.5W/cm2, which is twice the energy density of some automotive-grade commercial fuel cells.
Horizon hopes to increase the energy density to 1.8W/cm2 again in the foreseeable future. Horizon's new 60-100kW, high energy density, low-cost automotive-grade fuel cell stack will be commercialized by the end of 2019.
HorizonGroup said that when it comes to the commercial appeal of fuel cell systems, battery energy density per square centimeter is much more important than volumetric energy density.
