Battery development history:
In data centers, we use a large number of lead-acid maintenance-free batteries as UPS backup energy storage. As the last line of defense for data center power supply, all load safety depends on the reliability of batteries, but in actual applications, we found that more than 30% of data center load power failures are caused by battery failure.
Lead-acid battery technology has developed very slowly, and there is basically no major breakthrough. For all data center managers, lead-acid batteries are always a headache but a fact that must be faced. Application of lithium battery UPS in global data centers:
South Korea
In South Korea, thanks to the promotion of lithium battery manufacturers such as Samsung/LG/SK, lithium batteries have long been widely used in UPS energy storage and data center fields. It is understood that nearly 80% of new data center UPS in South Korea currently use lithium batteries. In 2012, the world's first lithium battery data center, Shinhan Bank, was put into use. It uses 34 Schneider Electric 500KVA UPS and more than 10,000 Samsung lithium batteries, and there has been no battery failure so far.
Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong
In areas where land is scarce, such as Japan, Singapore, and Hong Kong, users are more concerned about the space and weight of batteries. Since the energy density of lithium batteries is several times that of lead-acid batteries, the space occupied by lithium batteries is reduced by more than 60% compared with lead-acid batteries. The precious computer room space saved can be used to place server cabinets for rental profit. At the same time, the weight of lithium batteries is more than 70% lighter than that of lead-acid batteries, so it can greatly reduce the pressure on the floor load. India
In India, due to the unstable mains power supply, the battery is frequently charged and discharged, and the ambient temperature is high. Ordinary lead-acid batteries need to be replaced every 2 to 3 years. After using lithium battery UPS, it has a stronger ability to adapt to high temperatures, can be quickly recharged after discharge, and has a cycle number four times that of lead-acid batteries. Therefore, in a market as sensitive to price as India, although the price of lithium batteries is more than twice that of lead-acid batteries, they are still widely recognized by users and consulting companies.
North American market
In the North American market, customers pay more rational attention to the TCO (total cost of ownership) of data centers, because the maintenance and replacement costs (OPEX) of the equipment in the later stage are more expensive than the initial purchase price of the hardware. The design life of the UPS in the data center is usually more than 10 years. Although the lead-acid battery with a nominal design life of 10 years, it usually needs to be replaced every 5 to 6 years, because the use capacity of the lead-acid battery will drop sharply in the later stage of use, and the lead-acid battery will be scrapped when the remaining capacity reaches 80%.
Even after 10-15 years of use, the remaining capacity of lithium battery UPS still reaches more than 80%. Its capacity attenuation is a linear gradual process. We recommend that lithium batteries can be used to at least 70% of their capacity. Given the long life design and high number of cycles of lithium batteries, they do not need to be replaced within the 10-year life cycle of UPS, while lead-acid batteries need to be replaced at least once. This alone can offset the cost pressure of lithium batteries, which is less than 2 times. Lithium batteries do not need to perform these complex maintenance operations, so users can reduce operating costs.
China
In China, the trend of UPS switching to lithium batteries will be even faster. The lithium battery industry uses highly automated production lines, and production capacity determines cost. This is an industry where the winner takes all. As the world's largest lithium battery producer, various manufacturers have been vigorously expanding production in recent years, but the result is a serious overcapacity in the entire industry. As the Chinese government's subsidies for electric vehicles are gradually reduced, the lithium battery UPS power supply industry is in urgent need of exploring new application growth points, such as wind and solar energy storage, grid frequency and peak regulation, communication power supply, UPS backup batteries, etc. will become the new favorites of the lithium battery market.
