Advantages and disadvantages of CR2450 battery

1. Good safety performance. Polymer lithium-ion batteries use aluminum-plastic soft packaging in structure, which is different from the metal shell of liquid batteries. Once a safety hazard occurs, lithium-ion batteries are easy to explode, while polymer batteries will only bulge and burn at most.

2. The thickness is small and can be made thinner, ultra-thin, with a thickness of less than 1mm, which can be assembled into a credit card. There is a technical bottleneck for ordinary liquid lithium-ion batteries to be less than 3.6mm in thickness, and 18650 batteries have a standardized volume.

3. Light weight and large capacity. Batteries using polymer electrolytes do not need metal shells as protective outer packaging, so when the capacity is the same, they are 40% lighter than steel shell lithium batteries and 20% lighter than aluminum shell batteries. When the volume is generally large, the capacity of polymer batteries is larger, about 30% higher.

4. The shape can be customized. Polymer batteries can increase or reduce the thickness of the battery cell according to practical needs. For example, a new notebook of a famous brand uses trapezoidal polymer batteries to make full use of the internal space.

Disadvantages of polymer lithium-ion batteries

(1) The main problem is that the cost is relatively high. Since it can be designed according to customer needs, the R&D cost must be taken into account. In addition, the shapes are varied and the types are numerous, which leads to the need for various tooling and fixtures to meet the standards during the production process, which also increases the cost accordingly.

(2) The versatility of polymer batteries is poor, which is also caused by flexible design. Often, a new model must be designed for the customer for a difference of 1mm.

(3) Once it breaks, it is completely useless, and the circuit control must be maintained. Overcharging or over-discharging will damage the reversibility of the chemical substances inside the battery, thus seriously affecting the battery life.

(4) The life is shorter than that of 18650 because different designs and materials are used. Some have liquid inside, some are dry or colloidal, and the performance is not as good as that of 18650 cylindrical batteries when discharged at high currents.
