The United States has established an institution to develop new L822 battery technology for electric vehicles

 

A number of national laboratories and universities in the United States have recently jointly established a research center called "Battery 500" to focus on developing new L822 battery technology that can extend the driving range of electric vehicles and reduce the cost of electric vehicles.

 

Recently, the US federal government announced a plan to accelerate the popularization of electric vehicles. Through cooperation between the government and the private sector, electric vehicles and charging infrastructure will be promoted to respond to climate change, increase the use of clean energy and reduce dependence on oil. The establishment of "Battery 500" and the development of high-performance batteries are part of the plan. The US Department of Energy will provide this institution with $10 million in funding each year for the next five years.

 

There are 11 member institutions participating in this research center, including four national laboratories such as the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, five research universities such as Stanford University, as well as automaker Tesla and technology company IBM. Among them, Liu Jun, a materials scientist at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and Cui Yi, an associate professor of materials science and engineering at Stanford University, serve as co-directors of the research center.

 

Cui Yi explained the origin of the name "Battery 500" and said that the research center aims to increase the weight energy density of lithium batteries used in electric vehicles to 500 watt-hours per kilogram, about two to three times the current level, by developing new high-energy-density materials. Weight energy density refers to the amount of energy stored per unit weight of a battery. Currently, the weight energy density of lithium batteries used in electric vehicles is 170 to 200 watt-hours per kilogram.

 

According to reports, an energy density of 500 watt-hours per kilogram means that new lithium batteries will be smaller and lighter, which can reduce the weight and volume of electric vehicles accordingly, and double the driving range after a single charge, significantly reducing the price of electric vehicles.
