This study will provide an in-depth understanding of distributed energy storage systems while also encouraging installation and deployment. A spokesman for SRP said that 295 customers have submitted applications to install battery energy storage systems and join the study, and about half of the battery energy storage systems have been installed and commissioned.
SRP began offering grants of $1,800 each to its first 4,500 customers in May, encouraging them to sign up to deploy lithium-ion battery energy storage systems and agree to join the study. Energy storage systems registered on a first-come, first-served basis by April 30, 2021, will be selected for study at different times, depending on the type of study, according to information posted on the SRP company's website.
According to a survey conducted by research firm Wood Mackenzie and the American Energy Storage Association, the size of the U.S. residential energy storage market exceeded that of behind-the-meter energy storage systems for the first time in the second quarter of 2018.
Brett Simon, senior energy storage analyst at Wood Mackenzie, said recently that SRP's incentive program, in addition to new tariff structures from other regulated utilities in Arizona, is expected to encourage more residential energy storage system deployment.
Adarsh Nagarajan, a research engineer at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), said, "This study is a landmark effort to understand the value of distributed energy storage systems to customers and utilities. The first phase of the research has As we go along, the focus is more on collecting all kinds of data.”
The first phase of the research is to manage battery performance data as well as advanced battery testing data. Customer battery usage data and battery system performance data can be used in future phases of National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) research to develop modeling and simulation tools to evaluate the customer benefits and impact of battery energy storage systems on the distribution network.
