Which is safer, ternary lithium battery or lithium iron phosphate battery?

  Lithium Battery GN6050

  The common safety problem of new energy vehicle batteries is spontaneous combustion. Many people are not sure which is safer, the ternary lithium battery or the lithium iron phosphate battery. If judged according to this situation, the safety performance of the lithium iron phosphate battery will be higher than that of the ternary lithium battery.

  This is mainly because the heat resistance of lithium iron phosphate battery is relatively good, and the temperature of thermal runaway can reach more than 800 degrees. In other words, lithium iron phosphate battery will not spontaneously ignite until it reaches 800 ℃.

  However, the ternary lithium battery is different. The temperature of thermal runaway is basically about 200 degrees. In the case of spontaneous combustion of new energy vehicles, most of them are ternary lithium batteries. Therefore, for hot areas, the risk of spontaneous combustion of ternary lithium batteries will be higher.

  The differences between lithium iron phosphate battery and ternary lithium battery mainly include cost, low temperature performance, heat resistance, energy density and service life. The details are as follows:

  1. Cost: The lithium iron phosphate battery does not contain cobalt and other precious metals, so the cost of raw materials is low, while the ternary lithium battery is the opposite;

  2. Low temperature performance: the limiting operating temperature of ternary lithium battery is - 30 ℃, while that of lithium iron phosphate battery is - 20 ℃. In the same low temperature environment, the attenuation of lithium iron phosphate battery will be more severe;

  3. Heat resistance: It is said that the temperature of lithium iron phosphate under thermal runaway can reach 800 degrees, while the temperature of ternary lithium battery is only 200 degrees. In terms of heat resistance, lithium iron phosphate battery will be better;

  4. Energy density: The energy density of the ternary lithium battery will be higher, that is, the battery can hold more electrons in the same volume, so the volume and weight of the ternary lithium battery will be smaller in the same capacity;

  5. Service life: The cycle times of charging and discharging of lithium iron phosphate battery can reach more than 3500 times, some even reach 5000 times, while the cycle times of ternary lithium battery are only about 2500 times, so the life of lithium iron phosphate battery is longer.
