Traditional laptop batteries are composed of lithium battery cells, control circuits, charge and discharge circuits, casings and other parts. There are many reasons why the battery capacity is depleted too quickly. A lot of this is due to the inherent shortcomings of this type of battery.
Batteries
The loss of this type of battery is divided into two types, one is the physical loss of the battery core, which is the loss of the lithium battery; the other is the overall loss of the battery, which is the loss that we can view with the software. The two types of losses are related, but not entirely consistent.
Everyone knows that there is a protection chip in the battery. The main function of this protection chip is to ensure that the battery core will not be overcharged or overdischarged. Overcharging will cause the battery core to overheat and accelerate loss; overdischarge will cause the reversible chemical reaction inside the battery core to fail. The more severe the overdischarge, the greater the failure rate.
In order to achieve the purpose of not overcharging and over-discharging, the designer will configure a monitoring program on the chip. This program will always run and record the battery's charge and discharge data, including battery voltage and charge and discharge current.
When discharging, the recorded voltage and current data will be converted into actual measured power. When the battery voltage is close to the low limit, the monitoring program will consider that the battery energy is exhausted and compare the maximum capacity with the measured capacity. If the measured capacity is less than the maximum capacity, then The monitoring program will lower the maximum capacity to avoid overcharging.
Because when charging, the chip does not know whether it is fully charged. The principle of over-discharge is similar, and the specific reduction range depends on the manufacturer's settings.
The main purpose of this design is to take care of the physical loss of the battery core. Because there are multiple cells in the battery, the quality of the cells may be good or bad. When the cells with poor health begin to age, the cells with good health that are connected in series and parallel must also reduce their capacity, and the overall capacity will be doubled. Decrease, this is the overall loss of the battery. If the maximum capacity is not adjusted along with the worst cell, it is very likely that the poor cell will be over-discharged during the discharge process, causing the entire battery to be completely scrapped.
