The reporter learned from CATL, China's leading lithium-ion li-ion 18650 battery company, that the company's R&D team recently conquered key core technologies such as li-ion 18650 battery cathode and anode materials and developed a sample with a specific energy (mass energy density) of 304Wh/kg. Leading position in the international market.
Industry analysts believe that the current technological breakthroughs of CATL have achieved experimental success. As related technologies gradually enter the market application stage, the core competitiveness of domestic power batteries will be significantly improved.
According to industry reports, lithium-ion power batteries are currently the most widely used new energy vehicle power batteries, but the energy density of the batteries has become a bottleneck in industrialization. The energy density of a battery refers to the electrical energy released by the average unit volume or mass of the battery. Wu Kai, chief scientist of CATL, said that how to improve energy density has become a worldwide problem restricting battery development.
According to reports, lithium batteries include multiple key parts such as positive electrodes, negative electrodes, electrolytes, and diaphragms. The positive and negative electrodes are where chemical reactions occur, which are equivalent to the two meridians of the human body. Since the energy density of the current negative electrode material is much greater than that of the positive electrode, the positive electrode material has become the ‘short board of the barrel’. Wu Kai said that to increase energy density, we need to continuously upgrade cathode materials.
Stable supply of high-performance, high-nickel cathode materials in batches is a key technical difficulty. Wu Kai said that to this end, Ningde Times relied on the National Engineering Research Center and through collaborative development with upstream and downstream units in the industrial chain, gradually realized the large-scale production and application of domestic high-nickel materials.
CATL also targets flaws in negative electrode materials. At present, most of the industry uses graphite as anode material. As the demand for cruising range escalates, graphite can no longer meet market expectations for battery energy density, and silicon-based anode materials are seen as alternatives.
The application of traditional silicon-based materials mainly uses carbon coating technology, but the coated carbon materials will break and fall off after multiple cycles, resulting in poor battery cycle performance. Wu Kai said that CATL has turned to research on artificial electrolyte interface film coating technology. It took more than two years to develop a new artificial electrolyte interface film-coated silicon-carbon composite anode material with independent intellectual property rights. Its cycle performance is significantly better than that of foreign products.
