SK innovates new technology to recycle discarded electric vehicle lithium 18650 battery
According to foreign media reports, SK Innovation, a battery production subsidiary of SK Group, South Korea’s third largest conglomerate, announced that it is developing a technology that can recycle high-quality anode materials from discarded electric vehicle lithium 18650 battery. concentration of lithium hydroxide, and the company hopes to commercialize the technology next year.
SK Innovation (SKI) said that if the relevant technology can be obtained, it will be able to recycle more than 80% of electric vehicle battery components and recover higher-purity key materials such as nickel, cobalt and manganese from them, because such materials account for a large portion of the battery cost. SKI CEO Kim Jun said that used electric vehicle lithium 18650 battery can be recycled and reused, and also announced the launch of a battery-as-a-service (BaaS) strategy to use lithium 18650 battery to create a new service platform.
Because lithium-ion electric vehicles have just entered the global mass market, SKI's local competitors such as LG Chem and Samsung SDI are also developing technology to recycle EV battery packs. In the future, the share of electric vehicle waste lithium 18650 battery in the global waste battery market will increase from the current 3% to 90%.
Electric car lithium 18650 battery use chemical energy stored in a rechargeable battery pack to power the car, and once the energy is depleted, they need to be replaced. It is reported that the Chinese government is formulating relevant laws and selecting specific companies in various regions to conduct research activities related to the reuse of waste lithium 18650 battery. Currently, three South Korean companies, SK Innovation, LG Chem and Samsung SDI, are cooperating with small and medium-sized enterprises at home and abroad to develop battery recycling businesses.
