How smart IoT technology leads the transformation of 3.7V Lithium Polymer Battery

Recently, a series of electric vehicle accidents have reminded the industry that the safety of 3.7V Lithium Polymer Battery is always the primary prerequisite for the rapid advancement of battery energy density. At a time when the market share of high-nickel ternary batteries is increasing, how to better balance "safety" and "range" and find a balance between the two has become a pain point that the power battery industry urgently needs to solve.

In addition to safety, battery costs and integration with the power grid are also challenges faced by electric vehicles. However, challenges often mean opportunities. Envision Group, which has just completed the acquisition of Nissan's battery business AESC, hopes to use intelligent means to solve these challenges and help the industry find the "corner" of opportunities.

"Battery safety is the biggest 'gray rhino' in the electric vehicle industry. Envision will continue the ultimate safety of AESC batteries' 'zero major accidents' and is expected to reduce battery costs to $50/kWh by 2025. Based on Envision's smart IoT operating system, electric vehicles will become green mobile smart terminals, organically integrated with clean energy systems, and provide dynamic balance for fragmented renewable energy networks." Zhang Lei, CEO of Envision Group and Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors of Envision AESC, said.

Pursuing the ultimate safety

At the 18th Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition held not long ago, Vision AESC officially released the new generation of Gen5-811AIoT power battery products. The product will be officially mass-produced at the Vision AESC Wuxi plant in 2020. In the future, the total annual production capacity of the Wuxi plant can reach 20GWh, and it is expected to provide 3.7V Lithium Polymer Battery for more than 400,000 new energy vehicles worldwide each year. What has attracted the attention of the industry is that the newly released Gen5-811AIoT power battery product will have a high specific energy of more than 300Wh/kg. The higher the battery energy density, the higher the level of safety management is required.

Vision AESC CEO Masakazu Matsumoto revealed that as of now, 430,000 electric vehicles have been installed with batteries produced by Vision AESC in Japan, the United States and Europe, and the incidence of major failures such as battery fires is zero. It was this safety record that impressed Zhang Lei and his Vision team.

"This achievement stems from AESC's ultimate pursuit of battery R&D and design. Through years of cooperation with Nissan, we have fully mastered the data of the entire life cycle of the battery, and fully tested and verified the performance, safety and durability of the product. We monitor the target data in real time, strictly control more than 770 quality control projects in the production process, and make the data of the entire production chain traceable and traceable." said Matsumoto Masakazu.

In Zhang Lei's view, such a safety record is on the surface good materials and good quality control, behind which are countless experiments and verifications, and the core is the production process and technology. And this is the core competitiveness of the power battery industry.

Zhao Weijun, executive director and head of China business of Envision AESC, revealed that last year Envision AESC's global shipments were about 4.1GWh, with the main markets in Japan, the United States and the United Kingdom. It is expected that shipments will reach 6-6.1GWh this year.

Redefining 3.7V Lithium Polymer Battery

At present, in the global power lithium battery market, CATL, Panasonic and BYD firmly occupy the top three positions, with a combined market share of more than 50%. In Zhang Lei's view, this market structure is far from being finalized, and the industry is still in the early stages of a marathon.

Zhang Lei believes that to truly solve the three major pain points of safety, battery cost and integration with the power grid, it is necessary to redefine the entire power lithium battery industry. And this is where Envision AESC has the opportunity to change lanes and overtake. Just like 12 years ago, Envision, which broke into the wind power field as a dark horse, led the wave of intelligent wind power. Today, Envision AESC also wants to lead the transformation of the power battery industry.

So, how will Envision AESC redefine the power battery industry?

Zhao Weijun told reporters that the redefinition is first reflected in safety. Based on AESC's many years of accumulation in batteries and Envision's digitalization and AIoT technology, sensors are used to accurately grasp the temperature changes and internal resistance changes inside the battery, collect and process them in real time, and perform strategic control, thereby achieving the ultimate safety of the battery.

"As an electric car, it may only be in operation 10% of the time and in a stopped state 90% of the time. The battery not only provides power for the car, but is also an energy storage device. In this sense, the battery's entire life cycle actually only plays 10% of its value. Another meaning of redefining the power battery industry is to truly release the value of a battery throughout its life cycle." Zhao Weijun said.

The release of the value of the battery throughout its life cycle also involves the issue of the cascade utilization of retired 3.7V Lithium Polymer Battery. In Zhao Weijun's view, retired batteries are not unpacked, but directly screened by data. Three battery packs stacked together can become a building energy storage device, which is the most suitable application scenario for the cascade utilization of retired 3.7V Lithium Polymer Battery.

In addition to the need to be redefined from the level of the battery itself, the relationship between batteries and electric vehicles, the relationship between electric vehicles and power grids, and the relationship between electric vehicles and people also need to be redefined. To redefine these relationships, it is necessary to use digital capabilities, AI capabilities, and the capabilities of the Internet of Things.

"In the future, 3.7V Lithium Polymer Battery will work in coordination with the power grid, and tens of thousands of electric vehicles and 3.7V Lithium Polymer Battery will need to rely on the Internet of Things to achieve coordination with the power grid." Zhao Weijun told reporters.

Empowered by digitalization and the Internet of Things

If the previous AESC incorporates Nissan's understanding of automobiles and chemical batteries, then today's AESC will incorporate Envision's understanding of energy systems and digital technologies.

In Envision's concept, electric vehicles and 3.7V Lithium Polymer Battery are no longer isolated, but mobile power stations on its intelligent IoT operating system EnOSTM, which can play a value no less than any wind turbine and any photovoltaic panel on the operating system. Based on this concept, Envision AESC will not only be a power battery manufacturer, but also an energy system manager with 3.7V Lithium Polymer Battery as the carrier.

In fact, Envision's wind turbines have a low failure rate and high power generation, which largely rely on digital and intelligent technologies, and rely on data, AIoT platforms and analysis capabilities. "Envision's intelligent business is such an empowerment tool. It originated from the wind power field, but it is not limited to the wind power field. Now it can be used to empower the power battery industry and bring disruptive changes to the industry." Zhao Weijun said.

Zhang Lei believes that through digital technology and the empowerment of the Internet of Things, the power battery industry can fully achieve management optimization throughout the entire life cycle, manage battery status and fault warnings in all aspects from R&D, production, installation, secondary use, recycling, etc., improve battery safety, efficiency and service life, reduce battery costs, and thus unlock the value of the power battery throughout its life cycle.

How can Envision's successful experience in the wind power field be replicated in the power battery field? How can batteries better play an industrial synergy with wind power and photovoltaics at the energy production end? The industry is waiting for Envision to give a clearer answer.
