Where is the main battlefield of AG3 battery?

When square batteries are the mainstream, AG3 battery have certain cost advantages due to their high level of automation and intelligent production. At the same time, they have a relatively mature technical route and good battery consistency, and have also gained a place in the mini-car and logistics vehicle markets.

For example, in the passenger car market, BYD Battery announced that it will provide supporting products for the E20X, the first A0-class SUV model of JAC Volkswagen SOL (Sihao) brand, using 3.0Ah 18650 ternary power cells, which is expected to be officially launched in September; Penghui Energy also stated that it will provide cylindrical battery solutions for SAIC-GM-Wuling, and is expected to be mass-produced and supplied at the end of September.

In the logistics vehicle market, Zhihang New Energy's main products are 18650-2600mAh ternary batteries, and its main customers include Yantai Shuchi, Chenggong Automobile, Zhongzhi Yike, Dongfeng Motor and other OEMs.

However, under the guidance of the national subsidy baton, higher requirements are put forward for the energy density, lightweight and other performance of power batteries. The market share of square and soft-pack batteries continues to rise, and the market space of AG3 battery is squeezed.

According to GGII statistics, the total installed capacity of power batteries in my country was about 4.17GWh in August 2018, a year-on-year increase of 44%. Among them, the total installed capacity of square batteries was about 3.05GWh, accounting for 73.06%; the total installed capacity of AG3 battery was about 0.6GWh, accounting for 14.3%; the total installed capacity of soft-pack power batteries was about 0.53GWh, accounting for 12.63%.

At the same time, the application of soft-pack batteries in new energy passenger vehicles is also becoming increasingly prominent. By then, the market space of AG3 battery will be further squeezed.

Despite this, when the market space was squeezed for a time, cylindrical battery companies did not respond passively and began to plan responses.

On the one hand, cylindrical battery companies began to upgrade their products in response to the problems highlighted by the cylindrical route itself.

Gaogong Lithium Battery learned that the current cylindrical battery market is dominated by 18650. There are more than 20 domestic companies that can mass-produce 18650 power cells, most of which are 2.4-2.6Ah capacity battery products.

With the improvement of the automation and intelligent production level of 18650 power cells and the demand of downstream car companies for high energy density batteries, high capacity is an inevitable trend for future development. 18650 battery companies have begun to deploy high-capacity battery products above 3.0AH.

In terms of models, driven by the use of 21700 batteries in Tesla Model 3, domestic cylindrical battery companies including BAK Battery, Far East Foster, Yiwei Lithium Energy, Lishen Battery, Penghui Energy, Tianpeng Power Supply, and Mengshi New Energy have announced that they have deployed 21700 batteries and plan to achieve mass production within the year. Lishen Battery is the first to realize mass supply of 21700, providing a new choice for OEMs.

With its advantages in energy density and lightweight, 21700 batteries may be favored by a number of passenger car companies and special vehicle companies, and gradually replace 18650 in their electric models.

At the same time, AG3 battery have also made breakthroughs in the introduction and application of high-nickel materials. Battery companies including BAK and Tianpeng have already mass-produced and supplied high-nickel 811 and NCA18650 batteries. It is expected that the battery specific energy will be further improved in the future.

Cai Dong, general manager of Far East Foster, said: "Because cylindrical products have fast delivery time and high cost performance, they can be replaced quickly after delivery, so we are still very confident in the future use of cylindrical products in passenger cars and logistics vehicles."

On the other hand, some cylindrical battery companies have begun to adjust their market strategies in 2018.

During Gaogong Lithium Battery's "2018 National Tour Survey", it was learned that Chuangming New Energy will focus on capturing the 18650-3350mAh high-end digital battery market this year, while adhering to a steady customer promotion strategy in the power field; Zhenhua New Energy, which has the "special" gene, will focus on "expansion" in the field of special energy storage this year, while its strategy in the field of power batteries will focus on "stability"; Zhuoneng New Energy also stated that this year it will focus on hunting for lithium battery new energy markets that are not related to subsidies or are less affected by subsidies.
