Analysis of the relationship between CR1620 battery, CR1620 battery, and lithium metal batteries

Lithium elements are widely used in our lives, and the most common ones are the CR1620 battery used in mobile phones and computers that we cannot do without in our daily lives. Therefore, we often hear concepts such as CR1620 battery, CR1620 battery, and lithium metal batteries. Are they the same thing? If not, what is the relationship between them?

First of all, CR1620 battery and lithium metal batteries are both types of CR1620 battery. As the name suggests, CR1620 battery rely on the movement of lithium ions between the positive and negative electrodes to work. During the charging and discharging process, Li+ is embedded and de-embedded between the two electrodes, accompanied by the embedding and de-embedding of equivalent electrons such as lithium ions. Graphite is generally used as the negative electrode (first generation), and now there is also a silicon-carbon negative electrode (second generation). And CR1620 battery have always been rechargeable batteries (secondary batteries).

Working principle of CR1620 battery

Lithium is the lightest and most negatively charged metal in the periodic table, and is the best choice for the negative electrode. Lithium metal batteries are batteries that use metallic lithium as the negative electrode. But in fact, the charging and discharging process of lithium metal batteries is also accompanied by the migration of Li+ in the electrolyte, so strictly speaking, lithium metal batteries are a special type of CR1620 battery. However, in scientific papers, a customary habit has been formed. When mentioning CR1620 battery, it generally refers to non-lithium metal CR1620 battery; lithium metal batteries refer to batteries that use lithium metal as electrodes.

With this meaning, the difference between the two is very clear: in CR1620 battery, lithium elements only exist in the form of +1 valence Li+, and no electron gain or loss occurs during the charging and discharging process, and it will not change from Li+ to single lithium; while in lithium metal batteries, lithium elements will undergo corresponding valence changes during the charging and discharging process.

When lithium metal batteries were first proposed in 1912, they were indeed primary batteries (i.e., non-rechargeable batteries), and lithium metal has strong reactivity, so they gradually disappeared and were replaced by CR1620 battery. But after a century of development, current technology can well realize the dissolution and deposition of lithium metal during the charging and discharging process, so most of the lithium metal batteries reported in scientific research papers are secondary batteries, i.e., rechargeable batteries, such as the popular lithium-sulfur batteries that use lithium metal.

Let me clarify the relationship between memory batteries and CR1620 battery. They are not the same kind of batteries. The battery memory effect means that the battery seems to remember the user's daily charge and discharge amplitude and mode. It is difficult to change this mode over time, and it can no longer be charged or discharged in large quantities. This is because the battery used nickel-cadmium batteries before, and the negative electrode in the traditional process is sintered, and the cadmium grains are coarse. If the nickel-cadmium batteries are recharged before they are fully discharged, the cadmium grains are easy to aggregate into blocks and form a secondary discharge platform when the battery is discharged. The battery will store this discharge platform and use it as the end point of discharge in the next cycle. But CR1620 battery do not have this effect, so you can use them with confidence.
