What are the new progress in the research of alkaline zinc-iron flow 1.2V Ni-MH battery?

 

Recently, a research team led by Li Xianfeng and Zhang Huamin, researchers of the Energy Storage Technology Research Department of the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has made new progress in the research of alkaline zinc-iron flow 1.2V Ni-MH battery, and the relevant research results have been published in Nature Communications.

 

Energy storage technology is a key core technology of distributed energy systems. In recent years, the alkaline zinc-iron flow battery energy storage technology developed by the research team has the characteristics of low cost, high safety, high open circuit voltage and environmental friendliness, and has good application prospects in the field of distributed energy storage. Nevertheless, alkaline zinc-iron flow 1.2V Ni-MH battery are accompanied by zinc dendrites and zinc accumulation during the charging and discharging cycle, which affects the reliability of the battery. Therefore, solving the problems of zinc dendrites and zinc accumulation and improving the reliability of the battery are the key to the practical application of alkaline zinc-iron flow 1.2V Ni-MH battery.

 

To solve the above problems, the research team introduced negatively charged porous ion conductive membranes into alkaline zinc-iron flow 1.2V Ni-MH battery based on their deep understanding of ion conductive membranes (Chem.Soc.Rev.). By utilizing the repulsive effect of negative charges in the ion-conducting membrane on Zn(OH)42- ions, the zinc deposition direction of the alkaline zinc-iron flow battery during charging is changed from along the ion-conducting membrane to along the electrode side, thus avoiding the damage of zinc dendrites to the diaphragm and greatly improving the cycle stability of the battery. In addition, this design can significantly increase the surface capacity of zinc-based flow 1.2V Ni-MH battery, and to a certain extent solves the problem of limited surface capacity of zinc negative electrodes in traditional zinc-based flow 1.2V Ni-MH battery. The research results have important reference significance for the regulation of zinc negative electrodes in zinc-based 1.2V Ni-MH battery.
