Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) recently announced that it has acquired a majority stake in nanotechnology company Black Diamond Structures (BDS).
BDS was established in 2014 and is mainly engaged in the production and commercialization of MOLECULAR REBAR, a proprietary technology for modified carbon nanotubes. This technology can significantly improve the performance of lead-acid and lithium-ion batteries and has good prospects in the field of energy storage.
After the acquisition, BDS will become a new business under SABIC's Special Materials Division. BDS's carbon nanotube technology will help the Special Materials Department solve several important challenges in the current energy storage market. Especially for battery manufacturers, BDS technology will bring breakthrough advantages in improving charging rates, extending battery life, and increasing energy density.
Liang Minshuo, Vice President of SABIC Special Materials Department, said that MOLECULAR REBAR technology will bring new opportunities to SABIC Special Materials Department, strengthen its innovation capabilities in the field of materials science, and improve the performance of special resins and functional modified materials.
BDS CEO John Hacskaylo said that this proprietary nanomaterial can be directly applied to existing battery production processes without additional investment, allowing manufacturers to quickly improve next-generation batteries.
It is understood that existing conventional carbon nanotubes are prone to problems such as entanglement, agglomeration and high residual impurities, which limit their ability to enhance the electrical and mechanical properties of materials in practical applications.
In contrast, BDS' MOLECULAR REBAR technology produces carbon nanotubes with uniform aspect ratios, clean and discrete distribution, making them ideal for high-performance energy storage applications.
In addition, MOLECULAR REBAR will also play an important role in the thinning and miniaturization design of next-generation batteries. This not only caters to the urgent demand for thin and light batteries in the global hybrid and electric vehicle market, but also reduces battery production costs, helping manufacturers increase production and expand economies of scale.
