The European Union has successfully achieved the first synthesis of "solar kerosene" using tower concentrator technology.
The SUN-to-LIQUID project, jointly funded by the EU's "Horizon2020" research and innovation program and the Swiss SERI (Swiss National Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation), was officially launched in January 2016 and is scheduled to be launched on December 31, 2019. Conclusion. The four-year project aims to produce renewable transportation fuel by concentrating solar energy on water and carbon dioxide. Partners of this project include ETH Zurich, the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, the IMDEAE Energy Institute in Madrid, Spain, DLR in Germany, the Bauhaus Luftfahrt in Germany, Abengoa in Spain, the American natural gas supplier HyGear B.V. and other well-known institutions and enterprises. At present, the project has successfully achieved the first synthesis of liquid transportation fuel, which is called "solar kerosene". The SOLAR-JET project supported by Horizon2020 has previously developed this technology and achieved the first production of solar-powered jet fuel at an experimental scale. The SUN-to-LIQUID project expands the verification of this technology to the scale of solar tower test circuits. For this purpose, the project built a tower circuit within the IMDEAE Energy Institute. Manuel Romero, a staff member at IMDEAE Energy Institute, said, "The concentration ratio of this loop is as high as 2500, which is 3 times higher than traditional tower solar thermal power stations." The solar radiation flux measurement system developed by DLR has confirmed the concentration performance of this loop. ETHZurich designed a solar reactor for the project, which is placed on top of the loop tower. Inside the reactor, the operating temperature will be above 1500°C, where water and carbon dioxide will cycle through thermochemical oxidation-reduction reactions to produce a synthesis gas mixed with hydrogen and carbon monoxide. The synthetic gas will then be transported to a power station built by HyGear, which will be responsible for turning the gas into liquid kerosene. Relevant staff involved in the project pointed out that this technology will have an important impact on transportation industries such as long-distance air transportation and ocean transportation in the future.
