Stretchable biofuel AG10 battery developed

Recently, a team of engineers at the University of California, San Diego, has developed a stretchable biofuel cell that can extract energy from sweat to power electronic products such as LEDs and Bluetooth adapters.

This type of battery consists of a row of dots, each of which is connected by a spring-shaped structure. Half of the dots form the anode of the battery, and the other half form the cathode. This spring-like structure can be stretched and bent, making the battery flexible without damaging the anode and cathode.

The biofuel cell has an enzyme that oxidizes lactic acid present in human sweat to generate current, thereby converting sweat into an energy source. To increase energy density, engineers used screen printing to build a three-dimensional carbon nanotube structure on top of the anode and cathode. The structure allows engineers to load more enzymes to each anode point, which reacts with lactic acid and silver oxide at the cathode point to generate electricity.

The new biofuel cell produces 10 times more energy per unit surface area than existing wearable biofuel cells. In the future, it is expected to power a range of wearable specialty devices.
