Analysis of the industrialization development of 12V23A battery technology
The key to reducing the cost of energy storage lies in solving the problems of safety and cycle life of energy storage batteries. Lai Xiaokang, senior engineer of the Institute of Electrical Engineering and New Materials of China Electric Power Research Institute, pointed out that these technological breakthroughs are the prerequisite for the industrialization of energy storage, but the maturity of 12V23A battery technology may take many years, and pessimistically it may take more than ten years.
Whether the lithium 12V23A battery technology used in the Zhangbei demonstration project can represent the future development direction of energy storage technology is still controversial. Yang Yusheng, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, believes that although lithium-ion batteries have advantages such as high specific energy, high specific power, high energy conversion efficiency, and long cycle life, the technology is currently expensive, and more importantly, the safety is still poor, and safety is the most important for the power system. He introduced that the lithium-ion 12V23A battery pack of the energy storage demonstration project of the Southern Power Grid had smoked 22 times.
There are many types of energy storage 12V23A battery technologies. According to incomplete statistics, there are 12 different technical routes for energy storage according to the needs of different fields. It is understood that in addition to the 14MW lithium-ion 12V23A battery technology, the 20MW energy storage demonstration project in Zhangbei also has a 2MW flow 12V23A battery system. The State Grid has not yet determined which 12V23A battery technology to use for the remaining 4MW of energy storage. It is reported that the 4MW of energy storage was originally reserved for Japan's sodium-sulfur 12V23A battery technology, which accounts for more than 65% of global energy storage application projects. However, according to Yang Yusheng, although sodium-sulfur batteries have the advantages of high specific energy, high conversion rate and long life, they are not safe. The Japanese energy storage power station using sodium-sulfur 12V23A battery technology caught fire twice in 2011.
"Which energy storage technology to use is not the key." Lai Xiaokang believes that Zhangbei's energy storage demonstration project aims to provide energy storage companies with a future development direction, that is, high safety and long life.
There are not many related companies engaged in energy storage in China. According to Yu Zhenhua, companies related to energy storage include various 12V23A battery manufacturers, control inverter manufacturers, application solution providers, engineering implementation companies, etc. At present, lead-acid 12V23A battery manufacturers, lithium 12V23A battery manufacturers, control inverter manufacturers and some key material manufacturers are relatively mature, and other energy storage technologies have not yet formed a scale.
Due to the lack of core raw material research and development technology, domestic 12V23A battery companies are mainly in the stage of processing with supplied materials. According to industry insiders engaged in lithium batteries, since domestic energy storage has not formed a scale, domestic 12V23A battery companies cannot form bargaining power when purchasing upstream raw materials, so the price of core raw materials of batteries is much higher than that of foreign counterparts. In the end, they can only reduce the selling price of energy storage systems by purchasing domestic accessories.
Lai Xiaokang believes that most domestic 12V23A battery companies start with OEM production, and it is difficult to really benefit even if the scale of energy storage increases. To open up downstream space and improve bargaining power, it is necessary to increase R&D investment in the direction of high safety, long life and low cost, rather than building more product production lines. The global energy storage industry is just starting, and it is not too late for domestic companies to get involved at this stage.
