AG3 battery.UK develops liquid air energy storage technology

release time:2024-01-05 Hits:     Popular:AG11 battery

A consortium consisting of Aggregate Industries, Innovatium and the University of Birmingham has secured £350,000 in funding from the Department for Business, Energy and Industry (BEIS) to develop liquid air energy storage (LAES) technology.

Funding from the Industrial Energy Efficiency Accelerator (IEEA) program will be administered by the Carbon Trust. The IEEA funding will take the project from Technology Readiness Level 5 (TRL 5) to Validated Deployment in Special Environments (TRL7), a step towards the commercialization of the technology.

LAES technology is the product of innovation, known as peak reduction through integrated storage and management of air (prisma), which stores energy in the form of liquid air to provide compressed air. This system means the variable demand compressor can be switched off, increasing overall system efficiency by 57%.

The Prisma system will use a latent cold storage filled with phase change materials (PCM), which will be developed at the University of Birmingham's School of Chemical Engineering.

Dong Yulong, professor of chemical engineering at the University of Birmingham, said: "PCBs can be used to store both cold and hot forms of thermal energy. They are increasingly important, but so far the focus has been on the thermal form of thermal energy, with technology deployment Take place outside the UK.

“This new project focuses on cold forms of thermal energy storage, allowing us to innovate and build a platform to deliver a globally best-in-class system in the UK with the potential to revolutionize the industrial energy space.”

The PCM system will be installed alongside other system components manufactured at Bardon Hill Quarry in Leicestershire by Innovation, which is owned by Aggregate Industries.

Rid Eaton, Aggregate Industrial Energy Manager, said: "Sustainability is at the heart of our business and we are committed to leading the way in creating a sustainable energy future for our industry. As we are seeing, the impact of climate change is showing how we produce and consume How important energy is.

“Making significant changes, such as investing in energy-saving solutions, is the only way to have a lasting positive impact, and we are proud to be working with our partners on the Prisma project to be the first to install and support this pioneering technology.”

Innovationum CEO Simon Branch added: “We at Innovationum are delighted to be working with Aggregate Industries and the University of Birmingham, a recognized global leader in sustainability and technology, to leverage funding from BEIS to enable our Prisma Technology is commercialized rapidly.

“Following the successful initial deployment at Aggregate Industries’ Badden Hill quarry, we expect that the demonstration of Prismas’ energy efficiency and carbon reduction capabilities will show greater commercial and environmental benefits than existing compressed air systems, which provide a cost-saving alternative. .”
