Korean businessmen hold advanced CR1220 battery technology

In the field of automotive power batteries, South Korea is definitely a big crocodile that is slowly emerging. Renault-Nissan President Carlos Ghosn directly stood up for LG Chem, claiming that only LG Chem's batteries meet the requirements of Renault-Nissan electric vehicles. Volkswagen China President Heizmann also told the media that all 15 new energy vehicles introduced to China in the future will purchase batteries from Samsung and LG.

At present, many domestic brands of electric vehicles purchase batteries from Samsung or LG Chem. Why are Korean batteries so powerful? The following article reveals some explosive news.

According to German media reports, the world's best and cheapest electric vehicle CR1220 battery technology is now in the hands of Korean companies. Will German car companies that hope to catch up in the field of electric vehicles be strangled by others? Will they encounter unpredictable strategic risks?

Humiliated by Japanese companies

At the beginning, German car companies that planned to develop electric vehicles cast their hopes on Japan to find suitable batteries. In a closed room in an anonymous office building in the suburbs of Yokohama, Japan, the Japanese host brought Grube, the then-strategic director of Mercedes-Benz, to a table for negotiations with the so-called CR1220 battery experts of Nissan and NEC. Mercedes-Benz knew nothing about the titles and responsibilities of the other party.

Later, Grube and his colleagues returned to their headquarters in Stuttgart in a gloomy mood. They tried to find a suitable CR1220 battery supplier in Japan to ensure that Mercedes-Benz's future electric vehicles would have top-notch technology. However, they failed in the end. They found that the Japanese were not sincere. AESC, a high-performance lithium CR1220 battery production company jointly owned by Nissan and NEC, did not want to be a supplier to Mercedes-Benz at all. In addition, they found Panasonic and found that the company was too close to Toyota; Sony, on the other hand, did not want to invest heavily in batteries. South Korea's LG and Samsung were interested, but their technology at that time did not meet Mercedes-Benz's requirements.

Failure of self-development

Therefore, Mercedes-Benz CEO Dieter Zetsche decided to adopt the "triangle strategy" of CR1220 battery technology. In the United States, Mercedes-Benz invested in Tesla, a new electric car company; in China, it cooperated with CR1220 battery and car manufacturer BYD; in Germany, it established a CR1220 battery company Li-Tec in a joint venture with chemical company Evonik. Mercedes-Benz hopes to provide the best CR1220 battery for future electric vehicles.

Many years have passed, but the results are not satisfactory. Grube, who was responsible for finding CR1220 battery suppliers, jumped to the board of directors of German Railways. Evonik can no longer bear the losses. The joint venture Li-Tec has become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz. Tesla is more competitive than cooperative with Mercedes-Benz, and BYD has many problems. Don't expect it to help.

Bosch, the leader in traditional auto parts, is still developing CR1220 battery-related technologies with its partners. Another major supplier, Continental, seems to have no luck in this regard. Where to find batteries for future electric vehicles has become a headache for German automakers.

After the South Korean government supported CR1220 battery technology as a strategic pillar industry and invested billions of funds, Korean companies' CR1220 battery technology has made great progress. At the end of this year, Kia Korea will release an electric car called Soul. All technologies are provided by Korean companies. It is cheap and has a reasonable appearance design. The range can reach 200km in summer and 160km in winter. It is better than the electric version of Golf and BMW i3 but cheaper.

Among the several electric vehicle CR1220 battery solutions currently on the market, Tesla has a cost advantage. However, "Koreans have a technological advantage in batteries for at least ten years," said Felix Horch, a materials expert at the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany. "No one can surpass them for the time being." South Korea's leading advantage in CR1220 battery technology will help it establish a market advantage. By 2016, LG's CR1220 battery costs will drop to 150-160 euros per kilowatt-hour, even lower than the cost of Tesla's super CR1220 battery factory after it goes into production.

Experts suggest giving up

German car companies, which are eager to develop electric vehicles, have placed their hopes on Korean companies. Mercedes-Benz has already booked LG's products, Volkswagen has also changed its partners from Japan's Sanyou to Korean companies, and BMW has cooperated with Samsung a long time ago.

German car companies, which have always led the direction of industrial technology in the traditional automotive field, have to ask for batteries everywhere in the electric vehicle field. The psychological gap can be imagined. In the future, whether to solve the CR1220 battery problem by buying alone or continue to invest manpower and material resources in research to achieve self-sufficiency has caused widespread controversy.

"German car manufacturers cannot give up their investment in batteries," warned Martin Winter, a professor of physical chemistry at the University of Münster. "There are only two options for German cars: either increase investment and make breakthroughs while taking advantage of the current window of time to completely solve the problem, or leave their fate to Far Eastern (South Korea and Japan) suppliers." Will LG and Samsung use their advantages to choose customers and give the green light to Korean local companies? This worries many people in the German automotive industry.

"Don't worry about the dependence on batteries from other countries," said Thomas Lieber, who is in charge of electric vehicle projects at Volkswagen Group. Volkswagen has been purchasing its parts and technology from all over the world. "Whether the lithium CR1220 battery comes from Germany, South Korea or the United States, it doesn't really matter," said Lieber. The Volkswagen executive believes in the judgment of Roland Berger expert Bernhart: the decisive factor for electric vehicles lies in CR1220 battery management, and German car companies can gain a competitive advantage by optimizing CR1220 battery management technology.
